I'm in the break in process that Jim at Passion reccommended of 2 gal of GN2, 1/2 throttle.

 

Before firing it up the first time(at 500ft. elevation), I got 120 PSi with the actron tester. Jim milled the head, I don't know how much but he said I would be good running 100 octane, with milled head, +4 timing, & agressive dune port.

 

I took the actron tester back to sears and got the Craftsman tester. The test done today were done at 3,000ft. elevation (home).

Cold engine 110PSI

Warm engine 100PSI

 

I definitely expected higher numebrs than this. :banghead: Cylinders are only 1 or 2 PSI off. Is there something wrong here or am I OK to keep running? I know my jettting is very rich right now. I will be running the Castor 927 at 40:1 after the break-in.

 

Another thing I noticed is that my pipes don't feel as hot as they use to be, but I have not hit the powerband yet. I normally use the Maxima coolant but this time I just put regular prestone. I have the toomey radiator.

 

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Held full throttle and kicked until guage quit climbing? (Sorry no insult intended. Just a I've seen a lot of people did not know to hold throttle open while kicking/spinning motor and to kick/spin untill guage quits climbing.)

 

Try a little oil in cylinder and test again. If that makes more than slight difference, pull top-lend back down and double check clearances or for broken rings (to loose). If no change, I would call Passion and run it by him (make sure he did not miss-understand what you final combo was going to be,,,,accidents happen).

Did you check your end gap on your rings? Too much gap and you could be losing some compression.. did you get your cylinders bored/honed at the same time and was it done at a reputable shop? Also, you are sure you're getting a good seal to the head with your tester, right? The tester doesn't drop after a few seconds does it? Some stuff to try.. Good luck...

Also make sure that the threaded part of the tester(threads in where the plug goes) is as "tall" as the spark plug threads are.. If not, it will obviously read less PSI..

I did hold the throttle open all the way. Kicked until gauge stopped climbing.

 

I am getting a good seall with the tester and I used the used as long as the plugs and just got a reading at 111PSI at each cylinder, they were both dead even. PSI stays at its reading without dropping.

 

I did not check the ring gap. Jim ported, bored, and honed the cylinders. He also milled the head. My wiseco pistons were purchased from him (0.030 over).

 

I will be calling him tomorrow.

You should get a better reading once you warmed the motor up. Thats the way I have always done it.

Did you buy your gasket kit from jim?? If not that could be a problem..If he set you up to run a .010 base gasket and your running a .020 or more that will deffinatly effect your compression..Take a peice of soder and check your squish clearance just to see how close the piston is actually coming..

Just did another reading with a spoon of oil down the plug hole and got the PSI to 120. My readings are less with the engine warmed up. All my gaskets came from Jim. All were new OEM, except for the head gasket. He sent me a used one and said that I would be fine using some Ultra Grey silicone maker.

 

Any instructions on how to check the squish clearance with solder?

mine was less than expected as well so I changed to one size smaller CC dome, you will get more compression when your rings seat as well, after 1 season of riding my compression went up about 10 PSI.

Sorry, but that's weird that he sent you a used head gasket. Those things are cheap and any time i pull a head I toss the old one. Dunno about that... Just sounds weird.

Pretty easy stuff..Take a peice of solder 5 or 6 inches long and bend it into a L shape..Take out the spark plug and put the solder into the spark plug hole and take it as close to the cylinder wall as possible..Then have a buddy or use your hand if you can and press the kicker over a few times..Then pull the solder out and measure the thinest spot..Best to do it to both cylinders..

After talking to Jim, he explained that my compression was expected to be around 120. Head didn't get milled, it was a misunderstanding. Everything's cool though. Shee is running hard just playing around with my jets, kind of sputtery.
