Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 I bought my bike 4 years ago and it never idled. I rebuilt the engine with a .020 kit. The bike ran great but it would not idle. I was on vacation riding doing hill racing and it just seemed to lack power so I started moving the e-clip on the needle. it took two runs before I moved it to the bottom notch and it was still lean but ran great. Back from vacation I purchased a needle and jet kit and for the first time it was ideling and the plugs looked great. Two years later I have no Idle and I had to move the clip down on the new needle. I have had the whole fuel system apart and can not figure this problem out. I know the reeds are old but they wern't broke of held open. Any suggestions would help out Thanks Jeremy Quote
okbeast Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Sounds like you might be suckin in air somewhere after the carb. Check the boots or take the stator cover off and spray some ether around the seal that goes to the engine and see if the rpm's change. If they do then you're sucking in air. Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 12, 2006 Author Report Posted September 12, 2006 Whats it got done to it, jet sizes and elevation? 1996 with 1999 electronics GYTR Ignition box 200w stator w/adj timing plate and flywheel .020 engine Toomey T5 pipes and silencers Reed spacers TORS removed Open dual element air filters Barnett complete clutch not sure on jet sizes Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 12, 2006 Author Report Posted September 12, 2006 I jetted it and installed a new set of needles. After I did that it ran great and would idle for an hour if I let it. Now it will idle for 10 seconds before it wants to stall. I am planning on replacing the float needle and seat because I am having a bowl over flow problem. Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 15, 2006 Author Report Posted September 15, 2006 OK today I decided to tinker with my bike... I installed a new set of reeds checked the seals I advanced the timing another 1 1/2 degrees tore down the carbs and cleaned it all I lfted the needle another notch Now the bike runs great but still seems like it is not getting enough fuel at low RPM's I belive I have 330 jets in the carbs. How do I get fuel back down low??? Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 15, 2006 Author Report Posted September 15, 2006 Try a 27.5 pilot jet wouldn't that make it leaner at idle??? Quote
dajogejr Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 You should never adjust the needles to make up for idle...they won't do a thing. Your pilot jet, air screw and idle screws handle idle tasks. I know you have the TORS removal kit, but...did you drill and tap the carbs, and use the threaded brass bullet screws. These screws set idle... Tell me you're not using the cable adjusters on the top of the carb caps for idle adjustment?? Sorry...I have to ask if these sound like dumb questions... 27.5 pilot jets are normal for aftermarket pipes and no air box. They will richen the slow speed/idle circuit, not lean it out. 25 is the stock pilot, 27.5 is the next step up. Which is what I think the doctor ordered as well. Make sure you get the long pilot jets for banshee sotck carbs, they are different than others. Do yourself a favor too, and put the needle back in the middle clip... Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 16, 2006 Author Report Posted September 16, 2006 nope not using the caps for idle adjustments. I do have the adjusters on the side of the carbs. I just picked up some pilots and mains from vito's earlier today. So I'll give them a try tomorrow. and I never intended to use the needles for an idle adjustment. I was just trying to get more fuel for my lean condition. Thanks for help. I hope the different jets will help me. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Sounds good... I hated to ask...but...your whole post seemed pointed towards getting it to idle, but nowhere do you mention the air screw or pilot jet. Just wanted to make sure you were headed in the right direction!! Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 16, 2006 Author Report Posted September 16, 2006 Thanks for the help. I installed some 370 main jets and a new set of 30 pilot jets (I had 30's in there already) I started it up and set the idle and that thing has never ran that good. Now I am itching to ride and see how much different it is. Thanks again. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Have fun!!! Make sure you get a chance to do a plug chop...at 370, I think you're way rich on the main... 330 to 350 is probably more like it! Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted September 17, 2006 Author Report Posted September 17, 2006 When I get a chance I will install the new plugs, ride it like no other and then check the plugs. I had the 340 in there but I had to move the needle to keep from lean burning. I did pick up a set of 350 so if it is too rich I will just swap then out. Thanks again..... now time to Party Quote
