They market them as rev boxes for 2 strokes, but on a banshee they don't affect the rev limit very much. The type of pipes you have are what determines how high it revs, but they do increase the rev limit on 4 strokes. They can advance your timing some and give a hotter spark which will give you a little power boost and some even let you program the power curve for the type of riding you do. I've got a GYTR cdi which is kind of a milder one, but better than stock and I like it pretty well.

I wouldn't really say a waste, but I'd spend my money on things like reeds that are priced about the same before I bought a cdi. I guess if you were into drag you could get a really hot ignition, but most people just run a timing advance. I don't know your mods, but for the same price you could also get a coolhead and an adjustable timing plate and come out better off.

I would buy one if my stock CDI was shot, and I didn't have the almost 300 bucks for a Dyna programmable.

For 100 bucks or so, they're a bargain. A new CDI from the dealer is over 500 bucks I think... Why on earth you'd pay that over a Dyna is beyond me...

But, if you're buying one for performance reasons only, don't waste your money. Get a timing plate, set it at +4 and forget it. Better mod for 1/3 the price.
