Satsol67 Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Good chance this is a dumb question but i am going to ask anyhow. I noticed that when i go to 5th or 6th gear the clutch will slip when i get on it. Once i get half way or more on the gas it will slip like crazy. I have to back off and slowly give it the gas. My question is does that mean the clutch bans are worn? or will an adjustment fix this? I just want to have an idea what i am getting into before i pull the cover off. Thanks Quote

Thanks Sounds like time for a new clutch. ROckyMOuntain has them for $45. Now I am not sure how good these are for a really beefed up motor, but me and all my buddies have ran these (they used to be $35) with no issues. ONe buddies machien is hopped up a bit. They are actually clutch discs. Since you have slipped it a bit, definatley change the steel ones and friction ones. Like I said at RM they are $45 with heavy duty springs included. Quote
sheefreak Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 If it slips in 5th and 6th, it should slip in all gears. Just drain your oil and coolant, take off the side cover. Take the 6 bolts out of the pressure plate and give it a look. If they don't look obviously worn, use a dial caliper or micrometer to check the thickness of the fibers and compare to the tolerances in your clymers or factory service manual. Is your clutch lever easy to pull? If you find you have a lot of fiber left, could be the springs are shot. Quote
MILO Posted June 26, 2006 Report Posted June 26, 2006 it's probably slipping in all the gears, it's just more noticable in 5th and 6th. check the steels for bluing too, which results from overheating. odds are if they are blued, they are also warped. the tusk clutch kits from rmatv seem pretty good, haven't had any probs with mine over the past year. check the oil for coolant leakage, it will be milky looking if it has coolant in it. the coolant will degrade the clutch fibers and make it slip. if that's the case, your in for a new impeller seal, bearing, and i'd upgrade to an aluminum impeller while it's apart. buy a clymer's, if you don't already have one. and it'll walk you through clutch replacement and adjustment.
