dashee03 Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 Since +4 timing advance gives you more bottom end does it take away from top end speed? Thanks Quote
bandanshee Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 When I advanced mine, I noticed that the machine was alot more "jumpy" in the low rpm range, and I could not tell a difference on top. The advance probably has some effect on top end but I dont think it is at all noticeable. It should possible to gain top end by retarding the timing, but I have not tried it. Quote
ssanddemon Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 The basic rule of timing is this: run the most advanced timing you can WITHOUT pinging. The factory sets these motors up to run on any type of crappy gas without pinging. That's why everyone who runs +4* is fine, our gas here in the US is pretty decent compared to many other parts of the world. More than +4* chances pinging unless a race gas mix is run, tho mine still runs fine on super (91) at +7*. No gains at all from running stock or retarded timing, just less chance of the pings. Quote
dashee03 Posted June 5, 2006 Author Report Posted June 5, 2006 COULD I STILL USE 93 OCTANE WITH THE MODS IN MY SIGNATURE Quote
2003LimitedBanshee Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 Like ssanddemon said you should most likely be fine with your current setup, on pump gas. Personally, I run a strong mix of race to be on the safe side, at the current price of premium, it's not that much more expensive to run race. Also, it is not recommended to run retarded timing settings, due to the fact that it tends to increase the engine temps, often times pretty drastically. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 I heard it can take away a little from the top, which is why a dyna ignition is better (increases timing at lower RPMS's and reduces the advance towards the top) I think? Not sure how much difference it really makes though I still run mine advanced I think the pros outweigh the cons. I do mix 50/50 with race gas though but I also have 19CC domes. Quote
