trail rider Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Could someone help me figure out what could be wrong? I had my shift star modded by boonman, along with my flywheel lightened. And since I installed it, it hasn't been shifting gears right. Like when I drag race or shift the gears fast, sometimes it would hit neutral like between 2nd and 3rd or between 4th and 5th and occasionally pop out of gear if I didnt shift hard enough. I dont have it running right now though, I got the motor took apart/cases split cause im putting in a new crank and topend. but I did try adjusting the screw thing that the manual said and it would help some what. and it was kinda hard when I tried to shift through the gears to see if I could spot what was wrong. like betwen some shifts the gears wouldnt engage completely, and on the star the little arm would be stuck on a point of the star rather than down in the low parts, like it was being half shifted. and also, I never had any problems shifting before I had the modded shift star. racer Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 resplit the cases and cycle the gears with the top case have off. make sure theres nothing floatin around in there from your install. and that cam shaped stud thing is a mystery. every one and their dog says its adjustable but mine is a factory yamaha part is not cam shaped. its dead true, and so is the one i pulled out of the bike when it broke. trail rider Posted May 9, 2006 Author Report Posted May 9, 2006 no I have the cases split right now, im still waiting on my hot rods crank to come in. And thats what I have been doing is shifting through the gears (while also turning the sprocket) and most of the time it will hang up between two gears, like its not being shifted all the way or something . but when I pull the gear rows out of the case and shift through em, it does perfect. maybey this is normal, i dont really know, I guess I'll find out when I get it back together and ride it . Oh and that shift point adjuster thing, it really does adjust it. if you look closly it has a lobed side and it changes how the hooked part on the shifter thing grabes the little peg things on the star when you screw it in or out. blueshee03 Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 that stud or adjusting eccentric is adjustable.it gets wore after awhile and must be replaced.when properly adjusted ,the "c" shaped part on the end of the shift shaft that hooks the pins on the shift star will be set so the pin on the shift star is centered evenly between the two points of the "c" .also check the shift shaft to see if its bent or worn.sometimes the little spring that holds the "c"in the proper position goes bad and won't keep it aligned properly.also the rivet that holds the "c" shaped end to the shift shaft gets worn and allows the end to flop around to much.if it were me i'd just get a new shift shaft and adjusting eccentric and put in it.sounds like you have an adjustment problem to me whether its just not adjusted right or there are a couple worn parts. endofitall9 Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 Mines doing the same thing and boonman modded my shift star also. I already put my 2 cases back together, I've built way to many banshee engines to know if the tranny was fucked. I'm thinking where the engine doesn't really have a load on it that it keeping the shift star from acting the way it should or I may be wrong I don't know like trail rider said "We'll see when we get it back together" Quote
watkins Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 I have had wierd shifting issues with the case apart as well... once back together again everyting works fine.. probably the same case with you. You should be ok unless something is bent. Quote
