I have an 87 shee there is a oil leak where the shift shaft enters the crankcase. I can see a seal there, but was wondering how it comes off, and if i need to split the case to replace it?

That seal can be changed easily - pry it out with a screw driver and put the new one in. The seal is only a few dollars.

I usually drive the screw driver through the old seal and pry it out that way so I don't nick the case where the seal sits

a wine bottle corkscrew will work to remove the old one also. then i just tap in the new one with a deep socket almost the same diameter as the seal.

Before I ever owned a corkscrew I used a dry wall screw. Same idea/principle, and so much easier than splitting the cases.

Just make sure you don't gouge the aluminum seal surface as you are digging it out.

And, be sure to really clean that shift shaft well before putting the new seal back on over it. You don't want shit getting in there and grinding away at your new seal.
