setting up head

alright im looking to mill my head. now our school has a milling machine and i was thinkign about doing it in school... now i wanna mill it .025. now my question is how do you set the head up so its completely level so i take an even .025 off the whole head? thank you

Your school instructor should be able to guide you through it. It sounds like a good school project.

If the spot faces for the plugs are parrallel (and big enough) to the gasket surface of the head you could try bolting it to the table through the plug holes. You'd have to use some kind of brass washers to keep from messing the domes up though.

You need to check it with an indicator. Check it front to back, and side to side make sure it is the same all the way around. Take light cuts when you mill it don't hog it all off at once. You don't want to get any heat in it or it will warp. Afetr you mill it put some fine grit sand paper on a surface plate and rub the surface you just milled on it. Go in a figure eight pattern just to remove the high spots the mill lines leave on it. It sounds like alot but it really is pretty easy. Just take your time and you can do it.

yeah my teacher said he would help me level it... he just said before i do it I have to figure out some sort of bracket system forit so it wont shift while in the vice.... im trying to think of some sort of steal plate with bolts going threw it... and when we mill up to that point... take a bolt out.... keep milling to the next point take those bolts out and put the other ones back in. Just gotta figure out how to do it..... i sugested putting bolts threw the spark plug holes... but he said if it catch's it may mess up the plug holes... so thats a no... only other thing i can think of is using the head mounting holes. any sugestions for this

 

also what are some other home aid mods i can do

I put bolts through my spark plug holes. I made some brass washers at work so it didn't scare the domes. Once you get it level you don't want to un bolt it till you are done. You run the risk of it moving that way. I also cleaned the carbon out of the domes after I milled it. As for other mods yyou can mod your stock timing plate to advance your timing. I not sure witch way you go, But you just open the mounting holes up 4 mm. Do a search on here I think there was pictures and directions on here a while back. I'm getting ready to do mine in a month or two. You do need a fly wheel puller to get it off. Keep working at it. It's alot more satisfing doing it yourself.

Almost forgot. You may want to wait on moding your timing plate until you save enough money to send your fly wheel to some one like boonman to lighten it. May as well do them at the same time seeing as how you have to take the fly wheel off to get to the timing plate anyway. I don't think it is very expnsive. Just pm him and ask him about it.

If you have access to a lathe you can lighten your own flywheel. I'd suggest copying somone elses though.. Just copy, dont try and reinvent the wheel, you will get it to thin and have probs..
