cronstar Posted September 9, 2005 Author Report Posted September 9, 2005 thanks for the reply, makes sense to me now. i picked up some vacuum hose to day so i will see if it helps. Quote
2twin350s Posted September 9, 2005 Report Posted September 9, 2005 hey cronstar. i did not see it.the pic from the top does not seem to have it.now what that tube does is, it sucks vacumn across to the right side carb bowl to draw extra fuel in during cold starts. basically, it is a link to the right side choke.now put that vacumn line on and pull the choke out. you will probably have to hold it out while kicking. they get that way after a while. it should idle after about 40 seconds to a minute of that.here is another problem. if that tube has been missing, especially for some time, there is a good chance that the carbs sucked dirt and dust in the engine.i would still run a compression test after you get that tube installed.remember your cold compression readings should be at least 110 psi. and that is borderline for a rebuild.let me know how it works. i think that will get you going cuz i did not see that tube.it does go right on the opposite side of the choke straight to the other carb. there are 2 ports to slip the tube over. 2003LimitedBanshee Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 Okay so it sounds like it is missing. Just like 2twin350s said, if it is missing there is a good chance you've sucked some dust/grit etc. through it at some point or another. Installing the choke tube should solve the hard starting condition. Then you just need to check to see what or how much damage has been done. Maybe you'll get lucky but I'm betting it may not be such good news. Good Luck! Quote
J-Madd Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 (edited) My experience with missing choke tubes, is that the it won't start at all, or it'll run like crap. NOT take 200 kicks to start it, then start fine when it gets warmed up. I would say its low on COMPRESSION....like mentioned above by many others. I'm curious to find out, though....keep us posted. Welcome THE HQ. Edited September 10, 2005 by J-Madd Quote
Banshee~ Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 #42 on this chart is the choke tube Quote
cronstar Posted September 11, 2005 Author Report Posted September 11, 2005 thank you for all the replies. the choke tube definitely wasn't on there. so i put it on there and was hoping it would have solved my problem so i took it out yesterday for my birthday, but now couldn't get the dang thing started period. so i didn't even get to ride it. needless to say it wasn't a very good birthday. i haven't had time to mess with it yet. but i was going to check the spark plugs. someone has told me it could be that too. but once i take the spark plugs out, how do i check to see if they are sparking? i also picked up some carb cleaner yesterday to do that. and i also picked up a compression tester to check that. so how far do i break down the carbs to clean them. and if i do all this and i end up having low compression and have to get a rebuild, how much are we talking for that? cronstar Posted September 13, 2005 Author Report Posted September 13, 2005 ok, well i finally got a chance to do the compression test on my bike and guess what. the left side only pumps up to just below 90lbs. but the right side goes straight up to 120lbs. so what could it be. and is that why it just won't start and has a hard time starting. any price guesses as to what this will cost? thanks Quote
98bonerSTOCKshee Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 top end rebuild... with you doing the tear.down parts $150-$200 (piston kit) labor for boring the cylinders $35-$60 each and $26 for the clymers repair manual.... Quote
cronstar Posted September 14, 2005 Author Report Posted September 14, 2005 well, i took it down to a shop today and they said i needed a new top end. total price tag is $600. yikes. he said i could save myself a couple hundred if i did the tear down myself but i don't know what i'm doing and the last thing i want right now is to jack something else up. thegroup Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 what do u expect, its a dealership, right? they always charge out the ass for labor. if u live near adrian, mo, id tell ya to bring it my way and itd only cost u may 250-300(parts and laber) i only charge 20/hr and itd only take me about 3-4hr to do. dealers usually chrage about 40-60/hr Quote
cronstar Posted September 15, 2005 Author Report Posted September 15, 2005 gosh dang, i wish i did live near you. i would bring it to you in a heart beat. but unfortunately i'm in arizona. this place is not a dealership, it's just this guy that owns his own shop. the only reason i went there is because i have heard from a few people that this guy does really good work. so i figured why not. more bad news is this guy said i probly won't get it back for a week and a half. 2twin350s Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 do you think you can handle pulling the whole engine?then take it to him?once the engine is out it takes like 20 muntes to pull the top end down. that will save you some of the money. or get a manual. it will explain the process step by step and really the whole job only requires basic tools. do you know any car mechanics or something like that. that will walk you thru it? lately i cant believe the prices some of these shops are charging guys for service. i have always done my own work so maybe that is why i feel they are high. but i can tell you i would carge around 450 to do a top end.350 parts and 100 labor. cronstar Posted September 18, 2005 Author Report Posted September 18, 2005 (edited) so where do you get a clymers repair manual? next time i will probly do it myself. i'm totally ignorant when it comes to quads though, but i do have some experience with doing work on cars. so if i have some good instructions i bet i could do it.
