The main sign that a reed is worn out is if it does not make a good seal with the surface of the cage, ie it doesn't lay flat on the cage surface. Look for visible signs of wear, frayed chiped or cracked edges, discoloration ect. If the reeds were used for over one year and have a lot of hours on them I'd probably replace them to be safe. Be sure to get all of the reed retainer plates installed in the same configuration as they are now if you change them. If you turn the plates around it will make the reed less stiff, wear out fast, and be unreliable. If a reed breaks off it will wreck your tip end.

Also if the reed doesn't seat on the cage, should lay flat. I would suggest using blue loctite on the threads of the screws that hold the cages together. I had one come loose...............................NOT GOOD!
