whats the cause?

hey. i had a stator go bad a while ago and i was wondering how do they go bad or w/e they do? my mechanic says that its from the water? i think that its just becaose of how old my shee is. can anyone explain this to me? and what does a stator do anyways?

i agree wiith him sounds like water too me i have a 86 250r and it still didn't have any problems with the stator

ya i figured it would be age over water. i guess the wires probably rust. but what does it do like a banshee doesnt have a battery or am i tottally off from the purpose?

The stator creates electricity as the flywheel rotates in frount/around it. It does this because there are magnets on the flywheel. Anyway, the stator cover on older banshees have a crappy seal, and water often leaks in. I had a stator go bad, so i got a new ricky stater stock output. Its great!! When the weather warms up here im gonna put some silicon grease on the stator cover

i had one go bad. i think it caught fire, cause when i pulled the flywheel the whole damn thing looked like a charcoal ring.

Mine's failed too, but on inspection I found a broken solder joint, and I avoid water like the plague so in my case it was more of an age issue.

 

For some reason or another stock Banshee stators are sort of a weak point, one thing I think that contributes is the little casting hole on the cases just to the rear of the stator (where the neutral switch wire was on the RZ the Banshee cases were derived from), that lets water get in there and difficult to get out without pulling the stator cover...and we all know what a pain in the ass that is when you gotta pull the footpeg and shift lever just to get it off (and sometimes nerfs if ya got 'em). Anyway when I upgraded my stator I plugged that hole and so far so good...
