Hey guys. I have done a search and found a ton of stuff on Porting and how great it is. I have found that there are several different style of "port jobs" ie dune port, drag port, woods port etc.

The titles I assume are an idication as to what they are "best suited for". Can someone explain what exactly a "Dune Port" is. What is the basic process, what type of power can I expect, what about reliability and does porting automatically bump you into race gas land?

I posted a while back about getting ready for the next step. I am going to lighten the flywheel and advance the timing +4. With those mods plus what I have in my sig it sounds like I will get a nice little boost. How much more will I get with a Dune Port?

I am not asking if it is worth it because I have read enough on here to know it is, I just want to understand what it is and what it does a little better.

Thanks again, you guys all ROCK!!

Lets just say a dune port is like when you put on aftermarket exhaust and intake. The gains from getting rid of the stock exhaust and filter are tremendous, a huge difference! The dune port in a way is like opening up the potential of the engine that much more. I cant wait to get my dune port!!

The ports are the holes in the sides of the cylinders that allow vaporized gas and exhaust in and out of the cylinder. "Porting" is a modification to the size, shape and in extreme cases location of those openings. VERY small adjustments in the height of the ports can make significant changes in the way the banshee produces power. Porting can be expensive because it requires that the top end be removed and sent to be ported. This will require a fresh set of pistons and a bore job. And the porting itself must be done very precisely so it takes time.

Porting does not always require race fuel but increases in stroke/ and compression usually do require race fuel.

Some say that ported cylinders are less reliable because the openings are larger and the piston rings can more easily get snagged on them if the pistons and rings are not kept at "like new" tolerances. Alot of riders with ported engines tear down the top end annually to make sure everything is like new.

Personally I don't see the need for porting for my riding {trails}. I have been happy with pipes, reeds, carbs... basically bolt on mods. If I do need a new cylinder, I don't have to pay to have a new port job done on the new one.

Porting in a nutshell is basically allowing your motor to run more efficiently. It's really a balance game and is also dependant on other mods so they all work in unison. It's a balancing game between timing, volumes, direction of flow and velocities to achieve the desired affect. These are almost infinitly adjustable and this is why there are so many styles and types of porting. Tuners just name the style of porting to what "generally" satisfies those type of riders.

Thanks guys. I was on the right track just needed some clarification on it. Really, I am happy with the bike and the way it performs with the relatively modest mods I have done to it.

I think Holyman is the only person I have seen on this topic that could take it or leave it. The gains sound very tempting but the potential for reliability problems concerns me a little.

Redline Racing would be doing the work for me if I decide to go this route. I am not concerned with his workmanship as i have only heard good about his bikes.

Thanks for the input, other opinions or thoughts from guys who have Port work done are still appreciated.

Yep I got yours and Push's sitting right here. I should have 'em done this weekend.

Do you want yours painted and the safety chain?

If you have got the time and it isn't to much trouble, sure paint it and the safety chain is a nice touch. Thanks again.
