Ok, I have had turf tamers on the bike since I bought it. Recently I have been riding at places that are mostly sand and the Turf's are spinning WAY TOO much...

My concern is gearing and tire selection:

I ran last week at this place here in FL that had pretty smooth wide open sand pit area. I was able to go WOT pinned in all gears, up to 6th for a good 3-5 seconds. The prob is that I felt that I needed another gear since it was about at redline but not pulling any more? I know its mostly because the truf tamers were prob spinning like crap.

So I want to get a good set of rear paddles, but just something decent thats going to hook up good and not cost too much.

However, right now I am running a higher gearing (17/40) but with smaller 18" tires! So I was thinking since most paddles are 20-22" my 17 sproket might be too tall with those tires?

I have a cool head, 18cc domes, some home made porting, SST's, PCII's K&N no airbox lid, and jetting are the main engine mods.

Would I be able to just get the 20" paddles and leave the high gearing alone, or should I get 18" paddles, or lower the gearing to 16/40 and get 20's?

From last weeks riding, I would think that I could go bigger on the gearing\tires since I was WOT in 6th....Or maybe thats because it was spinning and NOT hooking up like the paddles would :(

Ya the 17 is gonna be WAY too tall. You may be able to pull a 16 but more than likely you'll need a 15 if your riding any hills. I wouldn't get paddles though unless you're only riding in sand. If you have to ride dirt or something to get to the sand your paddles are gonna be trashed in a matter of months. I ride sand stars which are great for general duning. Alot of draggers like haulers.

Yea, the Sand Stars or Haulers would be fine...There are some dirt trails, but the big sand pit is all flat and sand..Unfortunately I dont get to climb any big hills yet :(

I was thinking of going to the 16 anyway, but have to remove another link (Actually 2) to the chain to make that work, thats why I still have the 17

What about an 18" paddle? Any advantages or disadvantages with my gearing......

not that i can think of in sand...taller tires give you more clearance but otherwise i think you can run small ones. In dunes you usually have razorbacks n such to worry about.

Stay with the 20" rear tho. Don't go to an 18" paddle. Get the 20" and see how it runs before you change the gearing, but chances are a 16 tooth will work really good.

i run tamers and sandstars, both 20's. i never change my gearing between tires.

sandstars are a great all around tire for the money. haulers work great for drag, but are pricey. those are the only two tires ill ever consider again, or until someone comes out with something better.

Yea, I think thats about what I am going to do...Plus it will give me a little more clearance. I might throw on the 16 since I think the 17 will be too tall with the 20" paddles and their extra traction. Also, according to the gearing calc, the 17 will put me at over 90MPH!! I don't think I would be able to pull that in sand with my mods! :D

I also did some looking around and I think I might try the Kings Trubo Paddles...20x11x8 8 Paddles...Or try the Sand Stars. I will use the TT's everywhere else. Thanks

Rail, what gearing are you running? I run 18" Tamers thats why I was thinking I will have to lower my gearing for the 20's. I run 17/40 with 18" Tamers.

GBC Paddlemasters are a real tough sand tire that could take a little more dirt abuse than any other sand tire I can think of, just to add some food for thought.

Get Haulers they work great on banshees. My friend has some 22-10-10 10 paddle on his Shee. And they hook up really good in the sand.

I slap on my paddlemasters every now and then and they still look about new (new tire nubs worn off but paddles are fine), they work well in sand but I bought them for snow. I also have taken them out in the mud and run them down a gravel road to get to where I was riding. They are built for more general riding than a dune paddle.
