williamjernigan Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 I just got my rad bearing carrier for my -1 lonestar swinger and it came with the brake plate on it. I was wandering first of all if I need to take it off to slide it in the swinger or can I just try to expand the housing with some elbow grease. I know that this is a dumb question but is that why their is like holes and small lines welded into the back of the housing so it can expand? Quote
boonman Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Is this a round carrier? If so, than yes, the brake plate is what holds the carrier in the housing. And I can't see any amount of elbow grease tweaking the housing enough to slide the carrier through with the plate still attached?? Quote
racer Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 what about hydraulic elbow grease? Quote
Meat Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Boon, first thing I though was "Is this a round carrier?" but then realized that the brake caliper plate is seperate from the carrier on the Honda style setup. So now im confused even more. Quote

williamjernigan Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 If you look under the topic lonestar -1 swingarm you will see some pics of swingarm and of a bearing carier just like mine but my brake plate is already on it. Quote
sredish Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 you have to take the caliper plate off the carrier and then slide it in from the left side (left to right) and then reattach the caliper plate and then tighten down the swinger bolts. real easy yo! good luck. Quote
williamjernigan Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 So I need to pop out the seals then with just a screw driver right. Quote
sredish Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 This carrier has an outer snap ring, the black ring there. With that one, you'd use a pair of snap ring pliers, take the ring off, then the plate slides right off. When the carrier is set, you just slide the plate back on and install the snap ring back on. No seals should be messed with. Quote
Meat Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 (edited) So I need to pop out the seals then with just a screw driver right. Your confused man. did you get the bearing carrier yet ? If so, are the bearings and seals installed in the carrier ? Take off the big snap ring that holds the brake caliper mount to the carrier, slide the bearing carrier into the swingarm, put the brake caliper mount back on the bearing carrier and put the big snap ring back on to hold the caliper mount to the carrier... edit: yea what Sredish said.... williamjernigan Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 Yeah I know man, I'm a dumba**. This is the first time Ive ever worked on a bearing carrier or swingarm so I'm new, just bear with me. If I was more familiar with how it went together then I would know how to take it apart. Thanks Sredish Quote
williamjernigan Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 Oh yeah have no Idea what snap ring pliers look like. Do they fit in the small holes and pull them away from each other causing it to expand. I dont have any so what else could I use if anything. Quote
sredish Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 You described the pliers right. They have two little nipples on them that fit in those holes and spread it. Hey, there's only one way to learn, and there's a lot of people who don't even have the balls to try that shit themselves so it's no biggie to ask. We all learned from someone. Quote
boonman Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Get on down to the hardware store. Pick up some snap ring pliers. a universal set will do you just fine. Should be about $20. Last ya forever. You NEED them to take it apart without mangling everything up. In SRedish's pic, everything is taken apart that needs to be taken apart. Now, with the swingarm on the machine, (you do have the swingarm mounted, right? because if you don't, go do that first. It will all be much easier with the swinger on the bike....) you take the carrier, (unassembled, as it is in the pic) and slide it into the swingarm's housing. The left side of the carier in the pic is the chain side. The right side, is the brake side. The brake side goes in first, and you start at the chain side. Once the carrier goes all the way through the housing, you wll slide the caliper bracket over the carrier where is protrudes out of the housing. Then, you will see the groove in the carrier for the snap ring. Put the snap ring on. Now, you will be ready for the axle. Quote
