Percy Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Hi there, I am considerign replacing stock headlights with halogen spots. Local shop has them that fit the std mounting. They are 55w halogen globes. They seems to run quite dim when at idle, but at speed look gr8. As they are 55w, will they do any damage to the stock stator/electrical system, by pulling more power? racer Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 thats a good question and ive been wondering the same. but i do believe you can obtain a 35w h-3 bulb through ricky stator and those will work fine with your factory output stator. so you might look into that solution. Quote
sredish Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 They won't pull more power and they won't hurt anything. The stock stator pumps out around 75 watts give or take a couple and that's what your gonna get, like it or not. If you put 2 55w lights on there, then your gonna be short about 35w. If you think they're bright, that's great, but they're not putting out their full potential, only a percentage, and 35w bulbs might actually be brighter because they'd be recieving a full supply of power. Make sense? My 55w Hellas were dim compared to how they are now with the aftmkt stator, so chances are, your 55w lights are dim also compared to how they're supposed to be. Like I said, it won't hurt anything, but I'd try to find some 35w bulbs to try out also and see if there is a difference. Quote

I dont ride at night at all, so dont mind if they are a bit dim. I just like the look of them on the bike. I have searched all round town and cannot get any 35w globes for these lights, so my options are either stock lights, or these 55w ones. If you sure they wont hurt the Stator, then I will leave these 55w one on, as they look trick. If the stator does ghet hurt, does it affect ignition, or just kill the lights circuit? I am racing this Sunday and dont want to risk dropping out, just to have kewl looking lights! U sure they wont hurt anything? Thanks, Again, Percy-Zn Quote

If so, then I am not risking it, and will put the stock lights back on. I am South Africa, so a bit of a mission to buy a stator from Ricky Stator. By the way I did email them and they did not mention the chance of burning the stator out, just said the lights would look dim and yelowish, Cheers, Percy Quote
SDD Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Everything I have read and even talked to Rich (Ricky Stator) what happens is the lighting coils get hot and start to degrade. Eventually it will burn up and fail. It's well worth the money if you can buy a high power stator and run 55 watt bulbs. You will have a little extra to maybe add a single 35 watt bulb on your handle bars so you can see where you are going when turning. Quote
Percy Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 Hi SDD, Thanks again for the info. I am gonna put the std lights back on, till i organise a larger capacity stator, Cheers, Percy Quote
sredish Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 (edited) My bad. Didn't know it would overheat the stator, good to know Edited November 30, 2004 by sredish Quote
