So if you have any info or tips for a newbie to cross country racing im all ears.... 279107 Man, it seems like a whole lot of fun. I'm actually just getting into XC myself. I raced one race this year. I was hell bent to finish out the last half of the season. 1st race, I busted a tie rod end and couldn't finish then the 2nd race I was going to attend, my back gave out and I couldn't sit let alone on a quad. After that, I realized that I needed a new top end so with that I've gone from just a top end to porting, and a frame rebuild and may have her finished to suit up for the last race of the year. My plans are to have it all ready and go at it full force next season. Seems there is definitely some competition. Seems right now tho, the attendance fluctuates a lot, but as Jen said, they're changing around the schedule to hopefully help out everyone so we can make more races. If your machine is setup pretty well, just get in there and do it. It's fun, there's everything from highly modified yfz's to stock z400s and all in between. The OpenB is a good class, but there can be quite a few in it, where the OpenA may not have as many, but it's another 1/2 hour so I don't want to go at it without some endurance and practice first. The A class is good because they race in the morning before the course gets beat and then they're done by lunch where the B class has to wait until early afternoon. I'd do the A class if I wasn't worried about the extra 1/2 hour, because it would be nice to have a fresh course, and not as many riders and be done earlier. But I'll wait until I'm ready. Definitely get you a Hydropak if you don't already have one, no way of doing it without one. Pm me your phone number and I'll give you a call sometime. limitied03
Thanks alot sredish, so how is it? i mean did you have a blast on the races you did do? BenBB
Limited03, the ones I've been racing here in NM are lotsa fun, but like sredish said it takes alot of endurance. Most of the ones here average around 40 miles for the class I'm in, usually made up of 2 20-mile loops. It doesn't sound bad until you try to keep it pinned for that long, my first race I could barely hang on for the second loop and my right thumb was about to fall off. If you stick with it, you WILL be in excellent shape tho, heh. Anyway, I've had a blast at every race. Got some friends together and made a team, got some help from some sponsors and have ridden in some awesome places around here, without the races I would have never found out about the riding areas or had as much fun going. It's a real test of man & machine, not that other forms of racing aren't but XC/desert can be brutal, and just finishing is an accomplishment in itself. Having a reliable machine means more than having the fastest one, and riding smart can be the difference between a podium and getting towed back to the pits. But yeah, it is alot of fun and worth checking out, for me it's like a fast trail ride, mixed up with real technical sections, lotsa competition even when you don't see them, and some great people to hang out with. BTW Sredish & Jen, I'm hoping to make most or all of the "West" atvccs races next season if they get it split...
sredish
Thanks alot sredish, so how is it? i mean did you have a blast on the races you did do? Im just trying to get some opinions on XC so if anyone else has some input lay it on me 279447 Oh man, it was fun as hell. The firs race I was in, the course was 8.4 miles and we had 3 laps to cover. It's actually setup as 1 hour + 1 lap. This course was so tight and rough, it was taking 28 to 33 minutes for racers to complete a lap, so there you have roughly an hour, then add another lap. Normally, the races are fast enough that 4 laps is more typical. They're fun as hell and everyone involved was extremely welcoming and gracious in helping me out and coming up and introducing themselves. First lap of the 3, I had a hell of a time. Got high-centered in a mud rut, had to get off and wrestle it for a good 3 minutes and then on around, I hit a tree with my left front and then flying around a corner through the trees, I leaned way out for some body english and felt this really cold sensation on my leg. I look down to notice the sucky tip off of my hydropak had come off. Knowing damn well there ain't no finishing without it, I pulled over and ran up and down the trail behind me for 4 or 5 minutes till I found it, and I did find it. I must've been a wonderful site to see. The rest of the first lap (yep, I was still on the first lap) was pretty good and didn't have any more probs till halfway through the third/last lap, my tie rod end busted and I was dead in the water. Didn't finish, but it was a great first experience. Just awesome. My first lap time with all the problems was like 35 minutes, so without all the problems, I would've done pretty good. Here's my post after my first race, with some more info on what I did in it. Click anywhere on this sentence Anyways man, I'll give you a shout in a few. BansheeJen
Heck man why wait. There's a race this weekend, and then the last of the season is on Dec 5th. The new schedule is supposed to be out in about a week or so is what I was told. The races are a blast and many good people to meet. I'd have to say that I met more people at the last race I went to and didnt even race than I did at the 2 races I did race at. If you think your endurance isnt up to par then work on it. Its definitely harder than anyone thinks, or at least what I thought. Good luck.

BenBB
Hell yeah sredish! I know I can make it to the Cisco race next year, and any others in the panhandle or West of about Abeline, probably the closest one to you here in NM is the Carlsbad race, and it's next weekend 10/21. Anyway, next season for sure we'll hafta all hook up at some races, it's always a great time. Limited03, I wouldn't sweat the setup too much just yet, unless you're +3 and those East Texas tracks are real tight, you should be ok to go check out a race or two this year. At the very least they usually have a preride that's open to anyone, whether you're signed up to race or not (they do here on the day before the race, we rode one with ridingorhiding's dad and had a blast), may be different in TX but I thought sredish said the "buddy race" was the day before and you could do that too to get a feel for the track. I ran 18" rears for the first few races here and did fine, the last race on them they did hold me back a little because the ruts got deep on the second loop but they did ok, as long as you got a good swingarm skidplate, heh. If you can run a couple hard MX motos you've got a good start on endurance, what I do is try to ride as hard & fast as I can on the trails or dunes for about an hour until I feel tired, and then push it a little farther, there's no substitute for riding to get in shape for a race... You can usually ride Fri. all day and if not, the course is setup Sat. morning like 6am and you can ride the course until liek 1pm when the Buddy race starts, then you can ride once the buddy races are over. I can tell you one thing fellas, I'm gonna be busting ass this next season, that's for sure.
