Noob Banshee Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 Ok i went to go put new Steering stem stuff into my shee, and saw the threads where striped a little bit n e 1 know how i can fix that ????? Quote
SICK BOY Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 Get a die the same size and thread count, and clean the threads up.You may have to go a size smaller depending on how messed up the threads are. Quote
racer Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 yep, a tap and die has saved my ass tons of money. worth their weight in......i dunno, how about race fuel. Quote
J.J. Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 Which thread exactly, the one in the frame or on the stem? If it's an external thread you could use an external thread restorer Quote
Noob Banshee Posted November 6, 2004 Author Report Posted November 6, 2004 It is the frame threads on the bottom where it goes on top of the steering stem bearing. Quote
fixitrod Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 It is the frame threads on the bottom where it goes on top of the steering stem bearing. I don't know of frame threads on the bottom. I thought there was just a bracket at the top and a nut that screwed on the steering stem at the bottom. If it in the frame, try a tap to clean it up. If it to messed up, just drill and to to the next size. Quote
Noob Banshee Posted November 7, 2004 Author Report Posted November 7, 2004 thats not the hard part.... i have to find a 42mm tap and i cant find one!! Quote
Oilsmoke Posted November 7, 2004 Report Posted November 7, 2004 you are talking about the Big Lock nut that is in the lower frame that holds the bearing in. Find the thread caser that JJ showed you that will work to clean it up. they look round but are square in shape. Good luck. Quote
Noob Banshee Posted November 7, 2004 Author Report Posted November 7, 2004 i know ive seen them at my work how do they work. i work at napa auto parts store. Quote
boonman Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 That thread restorer will not work on the frame. Only on external threads. LIke if the threaded nut was fubar'd, then you could use that, but why not just buy a new nut? Cheaper, and less painful. In the frame, I would try to find a bottoming tap, www.mscdirect.com or somewhere else. But the tap alone will prolly be more expensive than finding a used frame.... . Quote
