If your carbs are still stock and have the TORS (the big ugly thing on top) your idle adjustment is on top. Take your seat off and there should be 1 dime size slotted screw on top of each carb, but there more involved than just idle setting. Make sure the cables have no slack and that the carbs are in sync! Buy a Clymer Repair manual it tells all the secrets.

 

Now if you don't have the TORS anymore then the carbs probably have been drilled then tapped on the outersides of the carbs. Make sure it's not the idle jet that you are adjusting. They are usually brass looking and can be counter sunkin.
