I think Im leaking tranny oil from the seal around the drive sproket shaft ( I have been getting drips in the back of the truck and finding oil under the drive sproket and splattered on the frame behind the drive sproket after just short rides). Is this common?? Do you think this is probly the place that the oil is comming from???? should I get the seal changed asap or will it hurt to run it like that for the rest of the season (2 months until I put it up for winter and that would be better time to do major repairs)???? and last question... how big of a job is it to fix this problem... sorry for all the Q's but any info is greatly appreciated.

THANKS GUYS!!!

come on. no one has any ideas on this. There are over 3000 members on this site and no one has had this problem before????? This is why I usually post questions like this in general discussion. cause I get lots more replies there. but it usually gets moved anyway... if anyone can help me I would appreciate it... Thanks again!!

Sorry dude I looked at your post and didn't know how to change the seal, I'm grabbing my clymer maunal right now to look give me a few mins.

I am looking at the clymer manual on page 123 "Engine lower end" it has a good picture of that drive shaft and by the looks of it you are going to have to split the motor. I am trying to make sense of the diagram, by the looks of it theres a needle bearing there and a seal after it. Check the shaft and see if there's any play in it.

As for your other question about should you do it - I would check how much oil is actually leaking. I mean a little isn't so bad, and you can probably go the rest of the season before winter when you can tear it apart and do a complete bottom end gasket/seal overhaul.

But if you are losing alot of oil fix it, because if youre like me you'll go biking all night with your buddies get all drunk and forget to keep filling it with oil :shootself:

I've never done this so I'm not 100% sure, hopefully someone with some better advice will show up

its simple, split the case, pull the seal, put the new one on and put the case back together. splitting the case for the first time is intimidating though. just take your time and read your clymers on how to do it. other than that i dont know what to tell ya.

cool guys thanks for the info. I am loosing like 1 tsp per 3 or 4 hour ride. not much at all just little drops that fling back on the frame. I think for now I'll just let it go and hope it dosn't get any worse before I take her in for the winter... Thanks again... :D

Because you have to split the cases buy a complete oil seal kit and change all the oil seals.Believe me you'll thank me for this. B)

Yeah I agree, buy the whole kit, crank seals too you might as well do it right when you take it apart.
