350miller Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 How do I get the hub the sprocket is on off. Is it threaded or just pressed on? Any tips on replacing the bearings? Quote
Holyman Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 The only thing that's threaded is the nut. Once you get the nut off, the whole works should slide out of the carrier. Then you can remove the bearings and seals. If you don't have a Clymer manual, now would be a good time to invest. They are well worth the $20 - $30 price tag. Quote
350miller Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 I been thinking of getting one just haven't got to it yet. Thanks for the info Quote
350miller Posted September 5, 2004 Author Report Posted September 5, 2004 I can't get the hub off. Tried using the press and heating it up. The hub is just bending. I'm pushing the axle towards the disc brake and have metal supporting the hub. Any ideas? Quote
J.J. Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 (edited) Sounds like the kind of problems that always happens to me The sprocket hub is splined and should just pull off, if it's stuck on the shaft, it's more than likely due to corrosion. You are correct in trying to move the shaft towards the disc brake, once the sprocket hub is off, it should all slide out towards the disc brake. If the carrier is still on the swingarm, it might be easier to take the carrier off first. Not sure what facilities and tools you have, but, I would try the following: Put the left wheel hub back on the axle and get a piece of pipe that fits nicely over the end of the axle and pushes against the wheel hub, to protect the axle. Support the carrier on something solid, heat the sprocket hub and hit on the pipe with a BFH towards the right. The bearing carrier should prevent the sprocket hub from moving with the shaft, thus forcing it off. Alternatively: My workbench at home, (1inch steel plate) has a notch cut out of it, purely for removing bearings from shafts. You could try something similiar. There's a real risk of bending the axle here, so use some good judgement when hitting the pipe. If nothing moves, stop, go back to the house and have a beer . Someone might suggest spraying some WD40 or some shit like that on there, but your'e just fooling yourself if you think that's gonna do anything. Edit: Once it's all off, you might consider doing the grease zerk mod to the carrier. BTW, Clymer just says: " Slide the driven sprocket and its collar off of the axle and remove it" Yeah riiight. bansheefreak Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 onceyou get the nut off the chain side of the banshee then remove brake caliper you canpush it out towards the clutch side it need be tap end of axle with a mallet after axle is out the hub will slide off....if the chain hub don/t wanna come off just try tapping axle so maybe it will come off then.. 350miller Posted September 5, 2004 Author Report Posted September 5, 2004 I used the carrier instead of the hub and got it off. Quote
J.J. Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Great! Do search for the axle carrier grease mod, it's well worth it and will make your new bearings last longer. Quote
toolman Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 I'm having the same problem. I have tryed everthing puller, press heat penetrating fluids no luck. It appears i have bent the hub also.If you get it off put up a post on how you did it. I do have clymers manual it is worth the money but no help here. Quote
