a&sbanshee Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 assuming it is a titanium skid plate the asking price isnt bad. me being a welder myself im pretty sure any ti welder wont put a welding hood on for less than 150 bucks plus the materials cuz otherwise its not worth there time to bother with it and titanium is high as a mofo to start with lol but personally i never liked a rear skid plate to start with Quote
Cotton eyed Joe Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Kinda cool. I've never worked with Ti. I hope to someday, but right now I can't afford it. Quote
NugShee Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 I didnt see much wrong with that ebay auction to be saying he is on crack. So why exactly are you saying he is on crack. Because of the price? Quote
Gargamel Posted August 29, 2004 Author Report Posted August 29, 2004 I say he's on crack for wasting $100 of ti on a skid!! Myself being in metal fab it's a over kill unless you drag race over football size rocks. and that thing would shatter if hit hard on a rock being how it's very britle and if it didn't break it would bend your axle cause the energy has to go somewhere. That's why most are made of alum. so it absorbs the energy in the form of a dent and not transfered to other parts. Quote
FireHead Posted August 29, 2004 Report Posted August 29, 2004 The plate is a pretty shitty design as it is. If you look closely the welds on it are crap. Ti welding isn't that big of deal if you have an atmosphere or a vey good flood setup. Ti machining is a big deal, it is best done on direct drive spindle machines with at least carbide insert tooling. The real crapper about this skid plate is that its not really a proper application for grade 5 Ti. Ti isn't any stiffer than steel, its tougher, which means it would dent as easily as steel, it just wouldn't tear as easily. THe person selling this either had alot of Ti and time on his hands or he has been smoking the weight of that skid plate of crack. If anyone really wants one of these I have a sheet of .060 Ti laying around somewhere. Quote
