Toomey Banshee Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 As if My little problem I referenced in my last post about my ripped carb boot wasnt enough, my son on the 99 banshee just got back from a ride in the trails behind my house and the shee was spewing white smoke from the right pipe. WTF is that? I'm assuming the top end needs a rebuild as its still stock from when I bought it new in 99. Other than that what is that smoke? Coolant leak? I'll tear into it tomorrow and take a look. Any ideas on what the problem is? Thanx. Quote
banshee04le Posted July 25, 2004 Report Posted July 25, 2004 Heavy white smoke from the right side is usually the crank seal on the clutch (right) side. Pull the right pipe. If there is tranny oil in the pipe, then it is the crank seal. Quote
Toomey Banshee Posted July 25, 2004 Author Report Posted July 25, 2004 Yup, it smells like burnt oil coming out of the right pipe. I assume I have to split the case to get at the crank to replace the seal, right? Big job? I havent done this yet, just basic stuff to date. I'm looking at my clymer and it looks like its gonna really suck. Guess I'll just have the crank trued and welded while its out, so thats good I guess. Man this sux, two shees down in one day. Quote
Toomey Banshee Posted July 26, 2004 Author Report Posted July 26, 2004 Let me clarify, the smoke is coming from the right, or throttle side of the bike. Same issue typically? Thanx. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 So then your sure it's not leaking coolant? Mine had lots of white smoke when the head was leaking. Much easier to fix than case gasket leakage. Does it spit coolant up, or are you running low on case oil? Quote
frocashmoney24 Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 yes, def check to see if theres oil in the pipe before you go changing seals. it very well could be a gasket leaking coolent, are you down on coolent or oil Quote
boonman Posted July 27, 2004 Report Posted July 27, 2004 If it smells sweet, you are burning coolant. If it smells like A Sewer, you have a crank seal leaking, and are burning tranny oil..... Quote
Toomey Banshee Posted July 27, 2004 Author Report Posted July 27, 2004 Yup Boon, smells like shit, burnt oil. I didnt get a chance to take a look at her today, it was my last day of vacation, hit the beach. I'm off next Fri, Sat and Sun, tear into her then. Oh well, upgrade time for the boys' shee. He better not be faster than me when I'm done with it though. I will, without a doubt be posting next weekend, asking for all the help that you all can give me with this mess. Looks like a real pain in the arss to replace the seals and whatnot. Gonna do the top end while its down too. Quote

Toomey Banshee Posted July 28, 2004 Author Report Posted July 28, 2004 (edited) Hey thanks Will. What with the Banshee graveyard behind your house I'm sure we can find enough parts to build a half dozen shees. Just kidding. Thanx for the offer and I'll take you up on it. I'm gonna rip it down this weekend and take the jugs to get them bored. I'll give you a holler if and when I run into trouble. MGD's? Nah, you gotta step up to the High Life my friend. Miller High Life, old but still outstanding. Edited July 28, 2004 by Toomey Banshee Quote
Maverick302 Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 I have the same problem, on the left though. Bigwill hook me up with a lightened flywheel and porting. Quote
