PlaynSand Posted May 24, 2004 Report Posted May 24, 2004 I recently ran across a letter from a well known oil company describing the effects of premix oil on the fuels octane value. According to this information using premix at a 20:1 ratio would degrade 92 octane fuel to 70-74 octane . And would increase the chance of detonation . Has anyone heard of this before?? Here's the link. Quote
PlaynSand Posted May 25, 2004 Author Report Posted May 25, 2004 Hey guys I thought I would post this part , since it is hard to find from the link. Anybody .. Heard of this before ? Thanks for your e-mail! I hate to tell you this, but running extra oil than what is needed can actually HURT your motor! Here's why: When you add oil to gasoline you severely alter it's properties. The first thing to be ruined is the octane value. But since two cycle engines must live with this , we trade lower octane for lubrication . This is the reason for generally lower compression ratios in 2-strokes. The only reason you have not exploded your Banshee is that you had the sense to buy race gas. If you had been running pump gas with 26 ounces of oil to 5 gallons of fuel you would have detonated it to death by now. Detonation occurs when the octane is too low and aluminum goes missing from your piston! You would have knocked the octane down to around 70-74 from 92 Quote
