nickxc Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 I had an earlier thread asking about this gurgaling sound Im getting. I just rode it for about 5 min and it was making the sound. It sounds like boiling hot water coming up through the small hose on the top of the head. The top of my radiator was hot but the bottom was cold. This could be just cause I only rode for 5 min and not hard. However I rode yesterday balls to the wall for about an hour and it ran good and the radiator felt warm all over. Im wondering if my coolant isnt circulating but would my motor have lasted yesterday if it wasn't????? Thanks for the help guys!!!! Quote
350duner Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 I would think if your coolant wasn't circulating the radiator would stay cold (coolant just sitting in radiator). If you rode hard and it didn't boil over like crazy i'd have to say your water pump is working. Quote
sredish Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 (edited) However I rode yesterday balls to the wall for about an hour and it ran good and the radiator felt warm all over. The radiator should be a little more than warm. It should be hotter than hell, well around 150 degrees unless it's overheating or not circulating. Even if it's not circulating it won't be cold, because there is coolant in the engine that will be really hot and it will warm the rest of the coolant up, maybe not hot, but warm enough to know it's warm. Easy way to tell is take the cover off the radiator and start the motor and see if you can see it circulating. It should look like it's flowing by the opening. If you have ANY doubts, drain the coolant, pull the cover and look at the impeller. An aluminum impeller is $30, is that little bit of money and the time to check worth damaging your motor? I hope not. Scott Edited April 25, 2004 by sredish Quote
nickxc Posted April 25, 2004 Author Report Posted April 25, 2004 the radiator was quite hot yesterday not extremely but hot (sorry about my wording) I think I will drain the coolant and check my impeller. I wont be able to do it today but maybe tomorrow. if its not that Ill have to check my head gasket I guess and buy a new one. Quote

If you take the cap off and start it, and it's flowing by really well then you probably won't have to take the big cover off. If you drain the coolant, fill it back up with straight Engine Ice. It will run about 45 or 50 degrees cooler with that stuff. Sometimes you can get it at the dealer on short notice, otherwise order it from RockyMountainATV.com or something like that. Quote
nickxc Posted April 25, 2004 Author Report Posted April 25, 2004 (edited) when I start the motor with the cap off the vibration causes the coolant to look like the atlantic in a hurricain and i cant really tell if its flowing or not. Im gunna start it and let it run and see if the whole radiator starts getting warm. It should all get warm at about the same rate right?? Do you think my motor would have been able to take the hard running yesterday if my coolant wasnt flowing. I rode it damn near wot for about 10 miles to the bar and back again????? nickxc Posted April 26, 2004 Author Report Posted April 26, 2004 I turned my idle down and got the coolant to stop vibrating and I could see that it wasnt moving. started the motor and let it run about 5 min. in that time my head got hotenough that I couldnt hold my hand on it and I kept sticking my finger in the radiator and the coolant was stone cold but how did my motor take me running the shit out of it yesterday if the coolant isnt circulating.
