Hey all, looking for some feedback on transmission mods.

I'm getting my 2nd and 3rd gears backcut right now (by MP Racing here in OR). I don't drag race and the only time I'm shifting under hard acceleration is doing tree shots (hill climbs), where I don't go past 3rd.

So, first of all, those of you with cut gears - any problems with them?

I've also heard folks talking about moving the shims on the tranny shaft to the other side of their mating gears. Anyone know why this is done and what it accomplishes?

Also, I'd love to switch to RZ shift forks, but like many people have said, they're d*mn hard to find! Anyone know of any? ;)

Finally - heading to St. Anthony's in 1.5 weeks...oh yeah!

Not sure if this is exactly what you're referring to but myself & others have had some problems with their gears getting bound up. The shift shaft has some play in it that allows the part that grabs the shift star to pop out & bind up between a couple pegs on the star, leaving you with only 2 gears. Well after un-binding it, you can pull the shifter off & put a rubber washer(to keep from grindage into the stator cover), then a couple regular washers on the shaft, then put the shifter back on. Theoretically to eliminate the left-to-right play of the shift shaft that allows it to bind up. Hope this make sense & clears that up for ya.

I couldn't help ya on the cut gears--no experience myself but I can say I've heard no complaints from those who have it done...like the neutral back cut...

RZ forks would be nice...but as you said, pretty hard to come by.

what do you mean by back cutting the gears i have had trans work dont to mine where on the gears there are 6 spots where the gear locks in i had three cut out so i dont miss any gears. if that is what you are talking about i have had no problems with it, and never missed a gear yet.

Yep, that's what I'm talking about. I've heard good things about it - just getting a little extra feedback. Thanks for the replies!

Can't wait to put everything back together and try it out...

I have rz forks and drum and they arent as good as I thought. I did switch around the shims, which puts the gears closer to the engagers or whatever you call them for quicker shifts. I did however blow many teeth off of 3rd gear on the street one day after shifting into it wide open, after about a month of doing that. I then put the shims in the stock locations and have no problems. your call

No, switching the shims is reffering to the spacers and c clips on the transmission gear shafts themselves, between each gear.

I didnt have any problems with the shift star like you were saying.
