BrokeStonedBiker Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 does anyone have any experience with honing cylinders. i know a guy who hones out lawnmower engins and gets the running good and sells them. does honing make the bore bigger? would you need to get new pistons for this? from what he tells me its really good for an engine and increase the PSI back to normal or almost as good depending on how bad the cylinders are. i probably wont do it till next winter but im just querious. bansheelover Posted April 14, 2004 Report Posted April 14, 2004 U must have honing and boring confused, boring the cylinders makes the cylinder diameter larger, honing just gives the cylinder walls a surface that the piston rings can adapt to and decrease the chances of the rings not seating well. Honing is a pretty simple process . You can buy cylinder hones for fairly cheap. Honing is usually done whenever the cylinders are removed. Boring can only be done by a professional shop (unless your very talented and have the right equipment). Also , when honing, be sure to go up and down the cylinder to give it a criss-cross pattern... this aids in the correct seating of the piston rings Hope this helps Matt Quote
