I just bought a new Banshee and I was wondering what cautions, if any, I should look out for. Are there any recommendations you would make as to what mods I should do right away to improve the performance or should I wait until I "break in" the engine?

Replace that air filter ASAP. After that the skys the limit. Pipes, tires, cool head, reeds, porting, polishing, so much to do, so little money. You'll see. B)

I think it is never good idea to trust the dealer to have set it up right. So anything that could damaged the motor needs to be double checked by you. Whatever you have for air filter make sure it is secure and lubed. Make sure tranny is full. Check coolant level. Check air intake from air box to carb is tight. Check that spark plugs are at proper torque. In other words do not trust anyone.

Also good idea to go over all fasteners after a very short warm up ride and then again soon after.

Enjoy. :)

Let me just clarify the air filter thing for you. You need to get one with an adapter plate kit. The adapter plate (usually aluminum) goes in the slot that the stock plastic filter fits into. You drill two small holes in the airbox and bolt the flange to the airbox. The flange usually has a rubber oring so it makes a real good seal against the side of the airbox, around the intake hole to the carbs. Then the filter clamps onto the flange so there is now way you can get dirty air leaking past the filter, and the filter cant come loose. The stock filter relies on the air box lid being on correctly to hold the stock filter cage in the correct slot on the lid and the botttom of the air box, and is sealed by a ring of foam in front of the flange which is not too dependable. The aftermarket flange and filter set up also allows you to remove the airbox lid which is a big performance boost. Taking the airbox lid off, or the snorkel off of the lid requires rejetting, wich takes us to lesson #2 jetting. You'll want to know about jetting because mods are so friggin kick ass on a banshee and help it make a lot more power, :bolt: but all mods affecting airflow in and out of a 2 stroke require rejetting which is actually kind of fun in a masakistic (SP?) :shootself: sort of way after you do it a few times.

Here, read THIS jetting FAQ

Congrats on the new banshee, you'll be needing a 12 step program in no time!

One of the biggest cautions is respect the bike. Even in stock form it will bite you.

Get familiar with it (shouldn't take long if you're addicted like the rest of us) before you start adding horsepower.

Personally I would break in the engine before you do much to it, but thats just me. I've known people in my area that bought a new banshee, took it home and stripped it. When it came out it was ready to race with T-5's, aftermarket head, etc.
