421stroker Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 My computer went to a black screen with white letters that says the file: system32/Drivers/Nfts.sys is missing or corrupt. How do I fix it. Any help would be much appreciated. Quote
Nighty Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Windows xp? windows 2000? You will need the orginal windows cd. insert the cd in your cdrom player and have your computer boot from that cd. somewhere along the way you will have an option to go into recovery console. next you will need to copy the Nfts.sys file from the orginal cd to the correct location on your harddisk probably beeing: c:\winnt\system32\Drivers\Nfts.sys or else: c:\windows\system32\Drivers\Nfts.sys be carefull, have a handy computer mate fix it Quote
ledofthezep Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Cause: This problem may occur if the Ntfs.sys file is missing or becomes corrupted when you convert your hard disk to NTFS. To resolve this problem, you must replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file. To do so, follow these steps: 1.Start your computer with the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. 2.You are prompted with the following option: To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R When you are prompted with this option, press R to select it. 3.At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old **Note This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, then the file was missing.** 4.At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers Where cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, and drive is the drive that you installed Windows XP to. 5.Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console. 6.Restart Windows XP Quote
421stroker Posted March 25, 2004 Author Report Posted March 25, 2004 Hey led. I am running xp pro. I dont' have a windows xp disk. I looked everywhere. My question is do I need to use the disk that originally came with my computer or will anyone work. If I could use someone elses would you happen to have one that you could let me borrow. I would be able to send you $$$ through paypal for your trouble. Quote
421stroker Posted March 25, 2004 Author Report Posted March 25, 2004 Oh yeah and do I need a windows xp pro vs. the xp home ed. I don't really know anybody that has pro. The guy that put the pro on my comp went to Florida. Can I download this file that I need from anywhere. Thanks for your help. Quote
ledofthezep Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Well, that stinks. Do you have any disks for the XP pro at all? A recover disk would probably work. But yeah, if you could snag an XP pro disk from someone it should work just fine. I guess you could try a home edition disk, don't think it'd put you in any worse place than you're at already. That file is probably the same on both OS's, but I don't know for sure. I don't have a copy or I'd send ya one... Quote
421stroker Posted March 25, 2004 Author Report Posted March 25, 2004 Ok, I can get a copy of home from my uncle. Thanks. Quote
ledofthezep Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 If all else fails, just load Home on there...not much difference between home/pro anyhow, nothing that would/should concern a person using it for a home pc. Quote
Nighty Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 nice led nice Another option to consider: Since you are posting here i assume you have access to a working putter. Buildin the harddisk with the missing or corrupt ntfs.sys in the working computer as a second harddrive. start the working putter and use windows explorer to copy the ntfs.sys file from the working harddisk to the failed harddisk. would be best to do this in a windows xp computer. What do you think led... a good option? Quote
421stroker Posted March 26, 2004 Author Report Posted March 26, 2004 I could do that if you could tell me how. I tried some xp home cds but nothing happend. I did get into save mode by holding down f5 put it still says it cant start because of that file. Quote
