I went to change the transmission oil the other day and noticed there was coolant in the oil. Is this from a head gasket that is leaking or would it be the base gasket? Or could it be both?

It's an O ring that goes on the end of the tube behind the water pump. It's never happened to me but I've seen the ring and heard that it leaks some times.

Thanks for the replies. I have checked my clymer manual and I don't see an o-ring. I guess I will just have to remove the water pump and check it out.

It's not the pump seal it's the coolant passage through the clutch cover. If you take the clutch cover off you will see a tube about in the middle area of the upper case right along the edge. There is one metal ring to hold it in place and one o-ring to seal the coolant from leaking into the gear oil.

Thanks. I will check that as well.

There's no "as well" about it. That's what we're talking about. There is an o-ring that seals the clutch cover passage where the coolant comes out of the pump housing, or into it, I am unsure which way it flows at the moment, but I think that the coolant flows into the pump at this point. There is also a water pump seal, that goes around the water pump shaft. This goes through the water pump housing and into the transmission. On the end of this shaft is a gear, which turns the pump, and makes it operate. It is unlikely for this seal to fail. Drain the coolant from the bike. Then drain the transmission oil. Now pull the kickstarter off, and pull the clutch cover off. You will see the o-ring on the clutch cover. On the inside of the clutch cover, you will see the water pump seal. It should be evident if the o-ring was leaking or not by it's overall condition. You should know.... If in doubt, replace it. It's cheap. if the head gasket was leaking, you would only be burning coolant. The transmission oil does not come into contact with the combustion chamber. Base gasket, the same thing. It can only mix with the oil at one of two spots. From the o-ring, or the pump shaft seal.
