mrmatt Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 This has nothing to do with Banshees, but there are a lot of knowledgeable guys on this website that are into more than just quads. So I figured I'd ask if anyone has had experience with the Holley Truck Avenger Carburetors. I nearly have my 460 ready to drop into my F350 but I cannot decide which carburetor to use. I'll drive the truck a couple of times a week on the street, but the rest of the time it will be off road, usually in the mud but occasionally I climb steep hills. I am worried that the 'off-road capability' of the carburetor is just hype and it won't work properly when climbing hills, especially rough ones. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks Quote
txblueshee Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 My buddie has one on his 460... we stood the truck up damd near on the tailgate and it stayed running. I also have a holley 670 STREET avenger on my 350 camino... really good carb. Elec. choke hasn't let me down yet. Mike Quote
Yamahammer Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 fuel injection will cure all those problems but the carb will work good also.. And alot cheaper the truck avenger is a regular holley with jet extensions and a vent tube conecting both float bowls thats about it a couple other little things but nothing to major.. If you have a holley already you can run with it and just add the extenders and put a piece of 5/16 fuel line on the float bowl vents with a cut out in the middle on the carb side so it can vent not all the way through just a opening..what size are you looking at getting what all is done to the motor Quote
raxen Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 THe avenger is decent off-road but certainly not as good as the holley dominator hp 750 for your purpose. Now that is one bad-ass carb. Quote
boonman Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 certainly not as good as the holley dominator hp 750 for your purpose You have got to be kidding right??? Dominators ain't worth a piss off road. if we were draggin, that would be one thing, but off road, it's a completely different ball game. I am currently running a Holley 750 single pump in my S-10, and I am switching to an Edelbrock 600. Not a truck avenger, just a normal edelbrock. They are way better off road than any holley ever thought of being. (Aside fromthe truck avenger of course.....) I would go wiith the truck avenger. I don't know how much you got the big block built, but go with the smallest CFM possible for the best throttle response. If you built it mildly, (RV cam and such) than I would think a 650 CFM would be fine...... it will still provide the power up top, and will provide much better throttle response down low... Quote
raxen Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 I've run an old CJ7 that was cut the hell up for a 392 hemi from an rail dragger for about two years now. It does great off road with the dominator. I have entered mud runs, some more mud runs,... I tried a Edbk but the response was way down compared to Holley. Quote
mrmatt Posted December 3, 2003 Author Report Posted December 3, 2003 we stood the truck up damd near on the tailgate and it stayed running Good, because that is the type of hills I like to climb. The compression is stock, I believe around 8.5:1. I'll be running an Edelbrock RPM manifold, HEI ignition, and the following camshaft: Competition Cams Xtreme Energy 4 x 4 Camshafts Specifications: * Advertised duration: 262 intake/270 exhaust * Duration at .050 in. cam lift 218 intake/226 exhaust * Gross valve lift: 514 in. intake/524 in. exhaust * Lobe separation: 111 degrees * RPM range: 1,400-5,600 I've heard a lot of good things about the Edelbrock carbs, but my personal experience has been bad. I have never run one myself. My experience is from the slack end of a tow strap. My friend had a built 355 with the Edelbrock carb and everytime he tried to yank me out of a mud hole, the jerk of the strap caused his engine to stall. I don't believe he had the off road kit in the carb. Maybe that would have helped. Quote
boonman Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 i do not doubt that in mud runs and things of that nature a dominator would do fine. It is flat runs....But I am speaking of off camber situations, uphill, downhill, all sorts of business that a dominator wasn't designed to handle. I am glad that you are happy with it, but I think that in his situation, the truck carb would be a better choice.... Quote
raxen Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 From my experiences with Edelbrock, you should definetely stick with the Holley Avenger series. I have a friend that has one on his 89 Mustang that he stripped the fuel injection from when he put in a 351 Windsor and it does a great job. His only complaint; That nice zinc plating they put on it turned a nice shade of yellow after he had it three months. Quote
onebanshee Posted December 3, 2003 Report Posted December 3, 2003 I use to run Holly on my truck, I had a '78 GMC with a built 350, i ran a holly on it for about 2 months and all i had was problems with it, it was never right, the last straw was when the float got stuck and filled my engine with gas and i had to tear the fuckin thing apart before starting it again or else it probaly would have blown sky high. I switched to a edelbrock and never looked back, I for one can tell you that all my friends that did off roading ran edelbrock and had no problems, Holly is an ok carb it just will never be as consistant as an edelbrock one more thing, I dont know if holly does but the carb i had on my truck (650 edelbrock) had different springs and such that you could use for different situations. I.E off road, mud, drag, whatever you could set it up for what you where gonna do with it. just my two cense Quote
