Stick them together, tape the clutch side off, tape the bearing openings on the stator side and the stator cover mating surface. Blast on...

Give eagle one wheel etcher a try if you don't have access to a blaster.

Isn't soda blasting or walnut a better option for cases?

I used a combination of walnut and sand in the blaster I was using. I went to harbor freight and picked up a few things. The sand did almost nothing. The walnut shells worked well. I will try glass bead and steel shot one day too

I use glass media and I hit everything , pull all bearings seals , after blasting I run tap through every hole, wash with hose, then I go inside to my wife's sink use hot water and dawn , scrub all mating surfaces and anything else you feel needs it. Blow it dry , ascetone mating surfaces with white terry cloth and you'll know rite away if it's clean enouph

Agree with above, I would select a less harsh media.  Soda, Walnut, or dry ice.  Sand will actually open up pores in the Aluminum and it will stain rather easy.  Glass seals the pores but still is a little aggressive IMO.

You may also consider clear coating the cases if you sand blast to seal them.
