Wallrat Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 I just noticed today that when I turn my wheels all the way to one side that the inside tire (the one on the side that I'm turning towards) can move freely all the way until its rubbing on the A-arm. This doesn't seem right to me but I just got the thing so maybe that's normal for some odd reason. I've got the old J-arm setup but those don't seem to have any slop. Instead, the extra movement is coming from where the tie rods attach to the steering stem. Both wheels react the same: the outside tire is solid at full turn but the inside one has like an inch of slop (tire movement, not tie rod movement). So is something f'd up? Quote
ledofthezep Posted November 18, 2003 Report Posted November 18, 2003 I don't think so,...my g/f's dad has relatively the same problem...is close, but not really a lot of slop like you're talking about... ...does this happen on both sides in conjunction with the direction of the turn? Is your alignment ok? Dunno man,...I'd wait for some more replies... Quote
Wallrat Posted November 19, 2003 Author Report Posted November 19, 2003 Yup, both sides. Alignment is okay. The problem only shows itself when the bars are turned all the way to either side. Quote
evil Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 are the ball joints good ? is the spindle nut tight ? the steering stem nut tight ?bring it to my house, ill fix it ! Quote
Wallrat Posted November 19, 2003 Author Report Posted November 19, 2003 I brought the manual with me to work and did some reading. Unfortunately the shee is at home so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to run some tests. I'm thinking that its not normal and not a good thing (damn!). So its either that the tie rod attachment holes on the steering stem are worn or cracked (hopefully not $$$) or the tie rod ball joints are worn. This blows, money is fun to spend on mods, not so much with repairs. If they're just worn I think I'll still go riding this weekend, just have to take it easy. If its cracked then I'm gonna have to pimp my wife out all weekend to buy a new stem. Quote
evil Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 if its tie rods or a steering stem i got you covered, if its just an end i might have a connection that can save you some money, im pretty sure we can get it figured out and going for as cheap as possible, if not, whats your wife look like j/k Quote
Blue Duece Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 Cheap Ball Joint Tester: get a pair of vise grips and squeeze the joint to the spindle, knuckle or steering stem, repeat the steps that caused you to think the joint was bad, if the problems gone replace the joint in question, if it persists your fucked and on your own heheheheh Quote
Meat Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 Check the steering stem stop. Those little ears bend and allows you turn your wheels to much. Could be dangerous. I braced mine, rock solid now. Quote
SICK BOY Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 I had the same problem over the summer, and it was a bent steering stem stopper like meat said.I used a piece of pipe and a hammer to make it straight again. Quote
