It's easy to match them to cub cylinders. I would match my own if I were you. The casting could be different than someone else's or they may have opened up the transfers different. You can't get too much transfer area, IMO. But I'm no engine builder. If you go too far in stock cases though, the gasket sealing surface is thin.

could you use a cub gasket as a template?

Most people do, but there may be room for improvement over just going by the gasket layout.
