Hello,

Wanting to build a 421 Serval but don't think I can afford to do a complete build currently. Was thinking about doing the motor now and run it with my stock carbs with airbox and current FMF pipes. If tuned correctly will this harm the motor at all? What kind of power potential would this motor make? Eventually I would like to run Shearer, 35 PWKs and pods but the pocket book is a lil tight.

It wouldn't be worth it to do it now especially if you cannot afford the carbs. 26mm Carbs would have a hard time feeding the serval the pipes you could run but the carbs i wouldn't  Also too small of carbs would kill your performance if you could even get it tuned right, tuning it would be tough. All in all just wait till you have the money to do it all.

Do it you'll be fine. Stockers can make some power. I think zilla made some power with FMF as well. Are you gonna be hanging with the big boys? No. But you can get the motor to run half decent.

X2, they'll do just fine until u can afford that stuff.

x3.

stock carbs are good for 80ishhp, the stock carbs on low-mid pipes on a serval rip down low and way torquey in the trails.  fmf pipes may hold the serval back some, but they will be fine to run on it.

have fun till you can get different pipes.

I ride with a guy that has a 421 serval with stock carbs and t5 pipes it runs pretty good

That's how my serval started out... It did just fine. But I would use a dual pingle

^^^Incorrect on so many levels..

To the OP: Pull the trigger now on the Serval, you can always add upgrades as funds permit.

Pretty rare that people can buy everything all at once. So go for the serval or even port your cylinders. But in the end for a guy like you the serval would probably be a perfect investment even in stages. However, here is my disclaimer: you do NEED to make sure you do all the internals at once or you will be pulling the motor apart a handful of times to get it right.

1. Quality Crank trued and welded

2. Transmission (stock cut, pro mod, EZ shift) claimed to all be the same but

some have slight differences

3. Shifting mods- Modded shift shaft

- Modded shift star

- Shift Pro

4. Clutch: A lockup is preferred but you can get by with out it for a while.

-Fresh basket, hub, and plate

- New cushions

-Fast or Driveline FZR1000 style clutch.

I wouldn't mind having a lockup clutch, but I didn't do any tranny mods when I got my serval, wish I had. If you don't do the tranny mods, you probably won't want a lockup.
