I recently purchased a 2002 banshee. The second owner claims that the original owner, (I am the third owner), had the motor bored 60 over to a 410. I didn't pay big bucks for it b/c there were no receipts to prove it. However the bike is extremely fast, and I just had is serviced and found out the barrings were completely trashed, and even with the bad bearings that bike was super fast. So I am wondering if this is in indicator of the bike having the motor work down.

 

Any tips or suggestions on how I can find out with out taking apart the motor??

.060 isnt a 410... Not even close actually it makes it a 364cc If im not mistaken. You can pull the head and read the numbers off the top of the piston.

What about the speed of the bike, even with the bad bearings, is that an indicator of there being motor work?????

What do you mean the speed of the bike? It will still run with bad bearings. Have you ever ridden a banshee before?

When the bearings go out completely, the bike is going to run extremely slow, and it is really difficult to do wheelies. Have you ever had rear bearings go out on your bike?

Have someone with a borescope (sometimes called a video scope) look down the spark plug holes and read the number on top of the pistons. Most auto repair shops have one these days. They're expensive, so unless you have a repair shop buddy, they're probably gonna charge you a bunch for a "look".

If his pistons are have carbon on them no chance he will be able to read it that way. Pull the had and you might have to take a piston out and wash it or steel wool it to read what size.

I am not mechanically inclined to do that, and dont want to waste the money on finding out. I was looking into motor rebuilds, and chrome casings etc, but everthing is so expensive. Also, I can't believe that new A-arms and shocks cost around 3 grand.

I am guessing you are talking about the axle bearings being out and unless they were froze up it is not really going to slow you down and unless you have ridden a lot of banshees you are not really going to be able to tell if it has had motor work done unless you take it apart and look. Just having it bored is not going to make a big enough defferance for you to be able to tell. It may be ported then that would make it have more power.

I have a friend that has one and it was kinda cool looking around inside the motor of a bike I had just bought. I took the reeds out and looked in the bottom end too. I was able to read the Wiseco number on the top of the pistons, some work on the transfers and also see that the cases were port matched.

Yes that would be the rear bearings.

Like it or not, u better plan on spending some cash. These things are very addicting :dance:

How to know if your motor is bored? It sits around yawning all the time?:jesterlaugh:
