Remus Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Hey guys, I've been searching like crazy to find a thread on long range tank painting but couldn't really find anything. Any ideas please? Thanks in advance. Quote
steady Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 just a couple of post before you new thread.... http://bansheehq.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=153019 Quote
Larry's Shee Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Other than that thread is about painting fenders. Son bought a big tank on the cheap, had beautiful paint .............. that was peeling off . Know nothing about how it was painted. I have seen (read) that tank grafixs for motorcycles are perforated to allow plastic to "breath". Dunno. I think good prep, adhesion promotor, paint, clear might hold up good. Don't know if I would drop $$ on custom paint tho, jmo. I'm actuallly going to try Ritt Dye first, as the tank is natural (off white) , if it doesn't look good enough, I'll paint it. Cain't spoil a rotten egg. Quote
steady Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Plastic is plastic doesnt matter if its fenders or tank...must use a adhesive first before paint or it will just chip. Quote
Remus Posted March 18, 2012 Author Report Posted March 18, 2012 I read that thread, but some people say tank paint will bubble. I saw on another forum of a guy who painted and then baked the tank and it held up. On the dye topic, I don't know, won't it just rub off again? And I guess the adhesive is NOT the primer? Quote

So Cal Suspension Posted March 18, 2012 Report Posted March 18, 2012 Mother of sweet baby jesus. Let's stop all the nonsensical rambling here. You CAN NOT, I repeat, CAN NOT paint an oversized gas tank and expect it to last. The oversized tanks breathe, and the vapor will destroy the paint. Any paint you put on there regardless of whatever prep you use WILL peel. It's not "just plastic"... Quote
Remus Posted March 22, 2012 Author Report Posted March 22, 2012 Use fibreglass resin to seal the inside of you're tank, voila, no breathing accept through the cap ill let you know if it works Quote

Only on the outside of the tank.... Hell, id wrap the tank in a fiberglass and you can even color the resin if you dont want to paint it. Quote

Hell, id wrap the tank in a fiberglass and you can even color the resin if you dont want to paint it. thats a real good idea to just coat the entire outside with resin. Could paint it any color and it would never chip. i prefer to use west systems and you can add the filler to thicken it up and not have to use mat. http://www.westsystem.com/ss/407-low-density-filler/ Quote
Remus Posted March 23, 2012 Author Report Posted March 23, 2012 I just want to get the tank black, so maybe mix flat black with the resin and paint it on? And just sand it down when finished... Will the resin alone hold on the outside? Quote
sidewayz Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Yes , resin will hold on for dear life ! Id scuff the tank with some 280 grit first . Then mix up small batches of resin and color and roll it on . Id do a few coats at least, but use the 280 grit in between them to scuff . Each coat will semi gloss no matter what, so it will have some shine to it . I wouldnt use anything but the resin color they sell for resin. Its in a little bottle , usually any auto paint supply store will have it. Quote
