BuckeyeShee21 Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 With silicone, leaks....without silicone....leaks, hole cut perfect in size....leaks, screws very tight....leaks, screws just snug.....leaks Quote
SAVAGE420 Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 Are you using the rubber gasket? Don't over tighten that. 100% it's leaking from the base? Could be between the upper and lower pieces. Is it perfectly smooth? Brand new or used? Post a pic of the base. I gotta take a leak now... Quote

Well it was a brand new rubber gasket that came with it, now its been on and off 3 times. The first time I know I overtightened it, the second time I think there was a chunk of plastic caught between the gasket and tank that peeled back when I tried to take the tank out of my slightly jacked up frame, the third time will be tomorrow morning. The base and tank are smooth and dry, if it leakes ill take a pic after I throw it across my garage Quote
ticktock Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 Permatex Aviation-Form-A-Gasket will work well to seal it up. Pick it up at NAPA. Paint it on, give it 30 minutes and turn on the fuel. This is not a RTV or Silicone based Sealant. It's kinda like roofing tar. It is really good stuff. Adam Quote
thomas h. Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 If you sand the bottom of you gas tank with 220 grit paper on a flat block that should take care of it. You might have to hit it with 440 Quote
BigRed350x Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 Drain the tank, let it dry out good over-night. Sand down the gasket surface lightly and put some yamabond on both sides of your rubber gasket, install it, then let it sit and let the yamabond dry completely for a day or two. I do it on all my pingels and they don't leak. - Jared Quote
BuckeyeShee21 Posted March 16, 2012 Author Report Posted March 16, 2012 I sanded it, but did not use yamabond. I would imagine that silicone based sealant gets eaten up by fuel. Thanks for all the tips. I think ill try the yamabond. I'm guessing that's more like a structual adhesive and not like silicone? Quote

It's very sticky stuff too so use gloves and be careful. I even use it on radiator hoses on my cars and tractor trailers at work. Does take a while to dry but its worth it Quote
