Cleaning up pipes?

Hey guys. I have a set of Toomey T-5's that I want to go on my 'shee. They have rust on the backside and by the head. they are also rattle-can painted flat black. I am thinking of picking up a sand blasting kit for like $20 and blasting them. Would actual sand be okay to blast these pipes with? What color do you think I should paint them? I'm thinking flat black or gloss/enamel black.

you could just wire wheel them or sand them by hand and then spray paint them like you said. be sure and use a high temp paint.
