Oregon dunner Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 I was at the dunes yesterday riding around and I decided to launch it in second and something broke. At first I thought I stripped teeth off the sprockets or had a loose chain. All the teeth were good. I started it up first gear was good and as soon as I hit second it locked up and sounded like something inside broke or I bent shift forks or something. So I think I am going to need some tranny work. My current setup. 4 mill crank and 68mm cub cylinder ported by HJR. 17 cc domes + 4 timing 35 carbs and a lock out clutch. I mostly dune and to steep hill climbs through the trees and some drag racing. What kind of trans would be best? Quote
DwnSouth Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Ouch! Anything with a billet second and your straight. I run a Rudy Kurtz 1-5...No billet 2nd yet but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. Quote

Gears do wear out, it happens. I would just replace it and go on. Quote
n2otoofast4u Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 No need to spend the money on billet gear for that setup. Pull it down and look to see what failed. Fix it with NEW parts and move on. Quote
DwnSouth Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Man tough crowd today! I was just thinkn while u got it down throw 2nd in there. { Quote

Usually the dogs break on the gears not the teeth wearing out. Quote

I dont have time to work on it so I am thing of bringing it to your shop and having you check it out. Quote

I've broke teeth on gears before with a little 4mil small-block twister. It can and does happen. When it happened to me I also broke a set of cases (which already had a chain whack). The price of the billet 2nd isn't that bad compared to the time to tear down and rebuild with new cases, new transmission, gaskets, seals, etc. If you can afford the billet 2nd, do it. Quote
Oregon dunner Posted January 16, 2012 Author Report Posted January 16, 2012 I will probably put in a billet gear and what ever else needs to be fixed. The fucked up part of it is. I just broke in the motor and did not even go through 5 gallons of gas. The tranny looked good and the only thing I replaced was a shift shaft, nylon bushing and spring and adjuster bolt. Quote
