dcalsv02 Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 I was at dunefest last weekend and got the chance to ride my buddies turbo raptor. the first thing i noticed was how solid and smooth his transmission felt when i would shift. Its a stock transmission. I also rode my buddies yzf 450r and his transmission felt the same. Not sloppy, nice and tight. Does anyone know what im talking about? My question is, How do i make my transmission feel that solid and tight? My banshee is a 99' and the transmission shifts and functions perfect, but it just feels a little loose compared to those other bikes i mentioned. What mods, if any can i do to make mine feel that good? Quote
CFH87 Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 Cut the trans maby? depending on mods this could help and have the shift star mod done. Quote
06specialedition Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 You have to remember though, you are comparing a newly designed raptor against a banshee that hasn't been updated in a long time. As for it being solid and tight i'm not sure I get what you mean. You can do little things to make it better. A Modded shift star and Modded shift shaft makes the world of a difference in smoothness. And...I honestly think what oil you are running makes the world of a difference. I've ran cheap oil and didn't like the way it shifted and neutral was harder to find. The best thing I ever did was the shift star and switching to Klotz Flexdrive Trans Oil. Just my .02 though. Quote
prssantana Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 To thick of an oil will make it hard to shift too. Quote
dirtydownunder Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 yeh stock banshee trans are poooooo , one of the best mods is modding the trans. camatv, hjr and a few others do this, its not an override but it makes a world of difference and you dont have to adapt your riding style to it. Quote

My first thought after i rode both of those bikes was that they are newer and probably have a more up to date setup than the outdated banshee's. The shifting just felt super solid and felt like you couldnt miss shift, i didnt have to pull up or push down as far with my foot to find the next gear. I run bel ray gear saver 80w in my trans. I just bought the shift star, i just havent put it in yet. Ill check on the shift shaft. I dont know what the cut trans is all about, so i will search for answers unless someone cares to explain it to me. Quote

I've never ran bel-ray but I've heard its great stuff. Something else I would do while doing to modded star, if you don't already have one throw a pancake bearing in while your in there. Worth the 30 bucks IMO. Quote
dcalsv02 Posted August 12, 2011 Author Report Posted August 12, 2011 I noticed while at dunefest last weekend that it looks like I will need to replace the shift shaft (splines are disappearing and the shift lever is getting sloppy) is there any shift shaft besides the oem one that is reccommended? camatv Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 the transmissions in almost all other atv's is a differnt style they have a completely differnt shifting mech in them there is no way to convert a banshee trans to that style. you can change the banshee trans to work a LOT better and you probably need to replace a bunch of worn out parts in your trans to get that "positive" feel back..
