252wheelieking Posted December 9, 2010 Author Report Posted December 9, 2010 http://www.nossmachine.com/banshee_heads.htm Go to the bottom of the page and it has a chart for approximate compression for different domes and elevation The chart is showing that I should have 130psi. with stock head & 197psi. with the coolhead/18cc domes . If I have a leak on the left cylinder why is the compression on both cylinders the same? I think that compression tester is wrong Im going to go buy the equipment tommorrow to build a leak down tester. Quote
hercalmighty Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 An air leak wont effect your compression. Quote
252wheelieking Posted December 9, 2010 Author Report Posted December 9, 2010 An air leak wont effect your compression. So what was the purpose of checking the compression? The topend is fresh I just got the cylinders back from HJR about a month ago with a fresh hone. So I know the compression tester is a P.O.S. Quote
hercalmighty Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 You can screw up a topend in a matter of minutes. If your topend is toast then there is your problem but you need to find why it is smoked. Im not saying that your topend is smoked but the compression check will tell you if the topend is gone or not. Get a good tester on it and check your compression. When you are doing the compression check are you holding the throttle wide open and kicking til the needle stops moving? Quote

I'm going to buy a better compression gauge than that POS one that I got off ebay for $20. Yes....I put the compression gauge in the right cylinder spark plug hole first with the left cylinder spark plug still installed, then held the throttle wide open & kicked until compression gauge stop moving.(90psi.) Then I tried it with the left cylinder spark plug removed & compression gauge still in right cylinder & got the same reading(90psi.) I also done the same thing to the left cylinder in same sequence as right cylinder & got (90psi.) Quote
hercalmighty Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 I know when I compared my buddy's auto store tester vs my craftsman tester it was about a 15psi difference. Quote

I can believe that cause I know for a fact that my topend is not shot because I looked in the cylinders when I had to put the new head gasket on. So what the best quality compression gauge to buy? hercalmighty Posted December 9, 2010 Report Posted December 9, 2010 Most guys will tell you Snap-on or Craftsman. I got the Craftsman set. It has pretty much any size thread you need and its a nice tester. Quote
