xander450 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Hi guys, I'm new to the forum... found this gathering of fine banshee minds while researching motors for an evil scheme. The scheme in question: building a pseudo-TZ350 with a banshee motor. This isn't all-new territory... there are a few examples around the interwebs of folks with a similar illness. Anyway, even though the motors are similar, clearly a LOT more development has occurred on the banshee side. So, lots of info to get a handle on to figure out which engine to build around. Hoping I could get some suggestions to help me on the path. I'm looking for 70+ HP on street gas - about where does that put me in terms of motors, 421 cub or something similar? Also, this won't be track-use only - its primary purpose will be canyon carving on public roads, meaning it's got to be manageable at lower RPM. What does that mean in terms of porting styles? Clutches? Anyone have a good line on a motor that they think would suit my needs? Assembling the parts pile now for the winter project. Thanks, Alex Quote
Larry's Shee Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Welcome to BHQ !! Just have to keep eye out here CL and E-gay. What are you using for a frame? Quote
xander450 Posted October 6, 2010 Author Report Posted October 6, 2010 Welcome to BHQ !! Just have to keep eye out here CL and E-gay. What are you using for a frame? Thanks! Frame plans are RD350, braced, with TZ350 monoshock. That said, I've got a possible line on a rolling TZ chassis. If that happens, that'll get the treatment instead. Quote
mia-shee Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 You should look into the new serval cylinders. I think they would be a good choice for a banshee /RZ swap. Due to its smoother power delivery. Andy at M&M has them in stock. Give him a call very good guy to deal with. Quote
Vintage Smoke Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Welcome!! I am here for the same reason as you. I have had Banshees in the past, but I am currently working on a Shee motor in an RD400. I does have a front end and wheels from an 88CBR600 hurricane though. Check it out: This motor: In this rolling chassis: It's not a direct fit, but with a little creative fabrication on things like motor mounts it's fairly straight forward. You may want to check out two other sites that deal with RZs/RDs: www.USA2Strokers.com and www.2StrokeWorld.com There are a bunch of like minded nutcases over there that might offer some help. The two boards are very similar and many of the members frequent both boards. One thing to keep in mind with the TZ is that it may be worth more to re-sell it, than it is worth for your project since they are getting pretty collectible. If you are getting it cheap you may want to flip it and fund your project. Also....since they only have serial numbers (not actual VIN numbers) they can be hard to title/register for road use. There are some TZ's out there that have been titled for street, but that is rare. In regards to THIS forum....it is a GREAT resource!! I have learned TONS about the Banshee motor, how it works, and how it is the same or different than the RD motor. It has become a valuable resource for me!!! Thanks guys!! Quote
xander450 Posted October 7, 2010 Author Report Posted October 7, 2010 Awesome project you've got going there. I'm on several of the 2 stroke sites devoted to bikes, but seems like there's a shortage of info on banshees specifically - this seems to be the spot for that. I checked out the serval cats - great suggestion, that looks like precisely what I need a motor to do. I was previously looking for a built motor, but now it looks like the way forward is probably to pick up a banshee bottom end and the serval kit. Vintage Smoke, what's your plan for pipes? Quote
Pat the one the only Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 this looks badass, since almost every part on a banshee motor interchanges with the RD350LC, you could make a monster of a bike! Quote

Thanks for the compliments!! Pipes will be a set of FMF Fattys, a band saw, a TIG welder, and probably what ever i have left of the hair on my head making them fit and work without looking like a set of butchered banshee pipes!!! The next build should blow this one away though.... That one is going to be a modern version of a Norton Featherbed frame...hand built chromemoly. It will be spoke wheels though. Kind of a mix of old and new. The engine will start with this: Quote
