RobMann Posted June 9, 2010 Author Report Posted June 9, 2010 Pulled the clutch cover everything looked alright. Pulled the top end. The left cyl was 10 psi lower. 110 and 120. The pistons and cyl.s look about the same. But I was surprised by how much slop the wristpins have. Should there be any slop there? also How much side to side play can the rods have on the crank pins?(If any) They are both about the same and I can slide the rods side to side on the crank pins maybe 1/8 of an inch. By slop in the wristpin needle bearings I guess it isn't as bad as I thought. On second look the "slop" is side to side, it just seemed like a lot of movement to me. I pulled the pistons off and rotated the crank while holding and "thumping the tops of the rods trying to feel for play in the rod bearings, the only play I can feel is them sliding side to side. The worst one is the left side. It moves aprox. 1/8 of an inch. Is that the knock? Or is that normal? Do you guys think its just in the top end? The pistons and cyl's are scored, but not really bad.I will replace them but theres No broken skirts or anything. the only gear under the clutchcover that has a little play is the one between the kicker and the large gear behind the clutch. So I got book. And answered my own question. Way out of tollerance! I'm wondering if I should buy a crank or have this one rebuilt. Havnt checked out prices yet.ugh... I really didn't have the time for this but I'm sure it will cost a lot to have someone else do it. Quote

AKheathen Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 you should get a little bit of deflection on both rods, but if, it is actually sliding 1/8" on the crank pin, then there is a problem with the crank. likely that the webbing is separated. and, it usually happens on the flywheel side. if there is allot of play in that kicker idler, it can "knock" on the back of the clutch gear, so i'd replace that bushing, too, which is pretty cheap. as far as option to rebuild or buy, you really need to check out all the clearances, but odds are it will be more to rebuild, than replace. i wouldn't recomend trusting just any old used stocker, either, but some do have low hour, and beefed up stock cranks which could be trustworthy, if you are lookin new, or if you want to sink the coin into yours and beef it up, provided the webbing is useable, then it can be an option, it all depepnds on what you want...
