cracked clutch cover

went to start my machine when it was snowing out. and it wouldn't start. kicked it for a good 20 mins, and still nothing.put a bigger main (300) and pulled the plugs to check spark and make sure she wasn't flooded. put it back together and started kickin. long story short it never started and the cover cracked from the bolt behind the kicker right under and all the way to were the Y is in yamaha, and all the oil over my garage floor. i ordered a new one from my local shop. i'm new to the banshee scene so i'm wondering if anyone has had this problem. i have pro armor nerfs w/o the heels so the kicker goes all the way down and around wich is the only thing i can think of. but any words of wisdom?

whoa, that sucks. make sure you have the correct float bowl on the left side. oh, and you should look around before ordering from a dealer. i bet you could've got a pretty nice cover for the price you paid on that stock one.

I've only seen a few things crack a cover. One of them is if your timing is advanced too far and you get a kickback when it tries to fire. If the kicker is still engaged it will drive the kicker backwards and crack the cover. The other thing I've seen crack the cover is if your kickstarter is somehow out of alignment, or worn excessively when you kick it all the force goes into the cover instead of being distributed between the cases and cover. Inspect your kicker real good when you replace your cover and make sure its not worn or anything weird. Other possibility is you might just have a lemon cover and it cracked just from fatigue.

 

Sorry to hear about it. At least it happened in your garage and not out on the trail. Also, you should have upped your pilot jet, not your main jet if you're trying to ease starting.

How much did a new cover from Yamaha cost ya? You can get a good used one on ebay for $15 bucks or if you asked, someone around here would probably just give you one if you covered the shipping. Welcome to the HQ!

OEM covers are extremely weak. It doesn't take much to break one actually.

A kickback is what usually cracks the cover. Having you heelguard removed won't cuase o problem because Banshees older than 91 never had them in the first place and when they did add them, they added extra metal on the footpeg mounting plate for a stop so the kicker wouldn't go down and get stuck on the heelguard.

I bought my bike with both covers already repaired. Stator cover had been plastic welded and the clutch cover had been jb welded or something. no probs with the patches.

thanks for all the input. my computer crashed so i haven't been around. my buddy got me the cover for 50 bucks. put it all back together and now she starts but bogs right off idle. its a bit warmer so i'm back to playing with carbs, like everyone says its trial and error and i'm still learnin.
