3lue by u Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 I just got a 98 banshee in stock form I went riding last weekend and had an absolute blast. I have had quads and dirtbikes just never a banshee. I have also rarely had to or wanted to upgrade anything. I did rebuild my old rm125. So I can do the work. I basically ride in the woods with the occasional drag across a field and I havent hit a track yet but want to. I need to get exhaust, air filter since mine is split, reeds, and obviously need to do some jetting. My question is what would be the best suitable upgrades for what I want riding wise. I was told FMF "woods" pipes but I can only come up with FMF Gnarly's. I was also told Boyesen was good for reeds or vf3's. I also was told to go down a tooth in the front sprocket. I am new to banshees but not a total newb. Any help is greatly appreciated. I live in ohio and dont plan on seeing sand if that helps. Quote

3lue by u Posted December 9, 2009 Author Report Posted December 9, 2009 I should have said that money is no object...... not. I really dont want to be the guy with 15,000 in my quad . but I know it takes money. lol. I plan on putting less than a grand into it now and maybe more later. I dont need a demon just a nice fast ass shee. I know suspension will be a later mod too. I want to maintain ridability too as my wife rides it and I take my son out on it too. I will post more info and pics when I have more time. Thanks Quote
DallasGDub Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 That is a great budget for new mods. You will have some left over. I would go with a set of used Pro Circuit pipes, a TORS removal kit, K&N filter, 13 tooth front sprocket, a billet timing plate set @ +4, and a carb sync tool. Very fun mods for woods and open trails. Even fun in the dunes. Other things can be replaced and upgraded as they break. Quote

Thanks look around for used stuff, i got a crap load of stuff off craigslist for dirt cheap , buy a set of rusted old pipes for cheap, pay for the sand blasting and paint those suckers with high heat i think black looks good chome looks crappy after a year or too, for a grand you should be able to do some nice mods, pipes is a must before anything else, a good set of pipes can give you another 7 or 8 hp Quote
GrMeyer Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 I would have to say if you have the know how you can save some coin but not much but you can mod the stock timing plate. you just round out the holes to adv it to 4deg I was talking to someone that got 5deg out of it but was pushing the outer thickness of the plate. A cool head is a great mod as well. It will allow you to change out your compression. I ride alot of dunes and tail riding and love my fmf fatties. You are going to get everyones .02 on pipes. If you can find a set of used pipes like said above that need some love but no dents then your in luck if you can get a deal. Opening the lid or taking the lid off will wake the banshee up when it is jetted right. And as 00Sheerzr said. just get some boyesen reeds. I ported my stock cages as well. There are some tricks of the trade on what you can do to save money. the tors kit is a great mod and will help you on the jetting. I would look into some suspension because the stock sucks. I added yfz 450 shocks to the stock arms and what a great mod. Added +2+1 arms and even better. So best of luck and ride the shit out of it! Quote
3lue by u Posted December 11, 2009 Author Report Posted December 11, 2009 Yeah I ride the shit out of it for sure. What pipes will be my best bet to look for? I am leaning toward FMF I have heard that PC's foul plugs on dirtbikes alot more. Now that is just hearsay. So let me know I have ridden a ton just never had the money to buy stuff for anything that I have to ride. Definitely going with Boyesen reeds and K&N with outerwears. The lid is already off and was when I bought it. So I will probably get the Outerwears lid . I have heard that if I am getting FMF I should look for FMF jets I feel they probably dont matter but maybe they do. Thanks for all the help so far. Quote
GrMeyer Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 If the plugs are getting fouled then their not jetted right. As for pipes I cant tell you what you want. But more then just give you advise. I love my Fatty for when I did hit the track because I had the bottom end and still had topend as well. But not like t5s. But for just riding around trails I love the power band that the fattys give. I was thinking of going to t5s for the dunes but hey. I already have fattys and I already beat them up the hill at the dunes. But it will also depend on how well your jetted. As for jets. Jets are jets. They might have their own needle but I have run the stock needle for three years with no probs. All you will need is a rang from 270-320 main jets. That should be able to cover you if you still want to do some more mods later on. Back around last year. there was a topic on here that had most of the pipes on a dyno. I wish I still had the graph. Quote
TwistedSheeRida Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 Well there is a wide variety of pipes you can get. I like the FmF SST i have on now for the trails they come on eary have a strong mid pull. The vf2s or vf3 reeds is the way to go. I prefer a bigger countershaft sprocket 15 tooth for the trails. Pull the airbox cover off you dont really need it. I like offset front wheels, i flip the rear wheels so they are wider. Quote
volcrano Posted December 11, 2009 Report Posted December 11, 2009 no man'you wouldnt have to go fmf jet kit-its all the same.you COULD get the longer needles for fine tuning but ull be fine stock.im in ohio also and ride trails.if your spending a grand-thats a good amount.grab a coolhead from chariot for $170 with some 19cc domes and run 93 octane.domes are an extra 60ish.so ur like $230 there.definately go with used pro circuits-and agreed-if ur fouling plugs on any machine you arent jetted right.i can let my shee idle for 20 minutes and blow the tires off instantly(not that that happens alot but when u get stuck ur fucked lol.you should find a nice set of pc's for $300.so ur $530.chariot billet timing plate for $60 and advance to +4.$590.grab the 13 tooth also-$610.i guess if u wanted to spend money on reeds id get the carbon tech low or mid tension reeds on stock cages.if your spending 1000-and now ur around 610 on my calculations-you have $390 left.have ur cyls aggressive trail ported and ull shit urself.then later buy the old lady a blaster lol.porting is the key to horsepower tho.if you dont wanna get that crazy yet tho-$600-$650 should give you what ur looking for.hope this helped.oh-look up pro circuit pipes on here in the jetting forum and see for yourself what people think about them compared to others for a "woods" pipe.hell-paul turner midranges would be a nice choice too and i think nyuk has his for sale on ebay for $300 buy it now.look nice for the price all chromey like. 3lue by u Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 Yeah I just picked up some used FmF Gnarly's and the guy threw in Boyesen dual stage reeds. I also picked up some jets and he gave me a 270 and a 280. So I am ordering a full jet kit. I also got a used K&N so basically waiting on jet kit in order to install all mods. Quote
GrMeyer Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 Well if you keep your lid off you should be starting around 280ish. Needle should be around the 3rd clip for starting off. I know mine liked the stock 25pilots and the 27.5 I moved up to after porting. But all in all you will see a big gain just in pipes and a intake. Quote
AKheathen Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 definately send your juggs out to get a woods port to match the pipes. tell them what you are looking for. your porting can be made real smooth and broad, rather than the big hit when the power comess on. the boysens are also a good choice for this reason. that is one of the biggest improvements i noticed with the reeds-rideability.....get the billet adapter that bolts in your airbox and you can clamp on a k&n filter. definately get the tors removal kit, and make sure it's sealed from water.....c coolhead with 20cc domes and timing plate, or you can have your head worked. i would not buy a blaster for your wife because they tend to be quite unstable and poppy, and you hae to toss them around to ride safely, not just sit down and ride. i ride with my wife and daughter all the time on mine. .....and i do alot of TAIL ridding too, gr... 3lue by u Posted December 17, 2009 Author Report Posted December 17, 2009 Yeah I am pretty sure it already has the tors removed. I ordered a jet kit and will probably be tackling the jetting this weekend. Along with cleaning and installing the pipes and K&N. I cant wait to rip again... Quote
