Ederasu Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Hey guys I'm new to the forum but not new to quads. I've owned just about every sport quad on the market, some models two or three of em. My dad owns a motocross track and I've been riding for about 12 years. I just picked up a 96 banshee for 900 bucks and I'm gonna completely strip it. It's in perfect mechanical condition but just needs cosmetic upgrades. My plan is to powdercoat many of the parts. My question is what would you guys recommend as far as upgrades and mods while I have it all torn apart? Any must-do mods? Thanks guys ahead of time. Quote
SAVAGE420 Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Porting, pipes, filter(s), advance timing (+4ish), bigger carbs(28-30mm) Noss or chariot head with 19-21cc domes depending on altitude and fuel wanting to be run. Quote
grizzly700 Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 (edited) if ur dad owns a trck u prolly wanna go the +2 a arms and suspension front and rear! maybe a mx port plus timming like chris said, and coolhead and domes. u prolly want high compresion and alot of timmign to have lots of power down low. so might have to run race gas if u wanna get that wild. maybe wider axle and offset rims so it handles real well and has a BA stance. toss a billet impeller while you got it apart. also maybe a pancake bearing and such just for protection. for pipes you r gonna prolly want some type of mid pipe. i have heard alot of good things about procircuits for mx style riding. i also wouldnt go ne larger than 28mm carbs if you ride alot of track. im making all these suggestions based on that you ride track the most. if u wanna drag or dune then most of that was useless lol oh yeah welcome to the headquarters Edited September 14, 2009 by grizzly700 Quote
Ederasu Posted September 14, 2009 Author Report Posted September 14, 2009 Thanks for the quick replys guys. Yeah I do alot of motocross but that's what my long travel yfz is for haha. I do want it to be good at the track but then be able to switch the swingarm and tires and have a dune quad. Is that possible? I guess I'm lookin for an all around performer. It was just freshly rebuilt and has a k&n filter, toomey t5's, durablue +2 axle and wide offset Douglas rims. Quote

dajogejr Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 Ok...here's my take. You already have a MUCH BETTER MX quad, both suspension wise and motor wise...the 450. You can make a banshee so several things ok. Just Ok. Or you can make it do one or two things really, really good. Like duning and drag racing. IMO, leave the track to the YFZ....make that banshee a dune/drag quad. You don't need to put quite as much money in suspension for a duner/drag quad as you would an MX friendly setup. If you want a great duner, here would be my list. Carbs, 33-35PWKs. Pipes, T5, Trinity Stage IV or CPI inframe pipes Porting, Porting, Porting 4 over swingarm (obviously, this would be a no deal for an MX bike) Better clutch Since you're an MXer...get the best shocks you can afford. When you say duning, do you just run around bowls, etc? Or are you captain crazy, jumping 50 to 100 feet, etc? That should dictate if you needs a run of the mill set of aftermarket shocks, or if you need the cat's ass.... Quote

I would add despite the fact that it just got a topend, i would tear the whole thing down and have th crank trued and welded. I have had 2 separate now. 1 of them came apart and took out a bunch of crap with it, the other i just caught on rebuild before it grenaded luckily. I would also do a modded shift star, good clutch with pancake bearing and a billet basket. Quote
Ederasu Posted September 15, 2009 Author Report Posted September 15, 2009 Wow this forum is amazing! Lol you guys are awesome. Thanks for such imformative responses. Alf- I might have to hit you up over the winter for some parts! I'm doin a complete rebuild so I'll need some bling! Lol Dajo- I like bowls but I'd have to say I'm a captain crazy. I've had to bail on the yfz on a 90 footer before and that wasn't pretty haha. I'm definately gonna look into the parts you recommended. I was thinking really wide and good suspension up front and in the rear having an extra short "mx" setup from the swingarm back that I can swap out fairly quickly. I don't need it to be amazing at the track as it wouldn't be raced there cuz of the 450 but more-so something I can take to the track and just screw around with. But I am gonna be on the dunes too so I might just have to build a top notch duner! Lol Rubberneck- thanks for the heads up on the crank. I'm gonna build the internals as soon as the stock top end goes again and I'll definitely get the parts you recommended! thanks again guys I appreciate all the responses! -nick- Quote
