hellride96 Posted July 20, 2009 Report Posted July 20, 2009 well heres the deal, my bike starts cuttting out about mid way through second gear, and wont clean up til 4th. so at first i ohm the coils and coils show to be good, so then i pull the reeds out and find a split reed. (thinking great i found the problem) but just to make sure i wasnt running out of fuel i drilled out my gas cap vent larger and had packard send some large billet bowls. so then we have a race this weekend and my bike still doing about the same thing. weather started warming up here in texas so we started playing with mixture at carbs, and it doesnt matter if you changed the mixture bike still cutting out. i have only seen the igniter coils go completely out, can the cause something like this. usually i only have pickup coils go out.(the ones around the crank... maynot be refering them properly). and help would be great . thanks in advance Quote
billy d Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 ive had stator windings ohm good and still be be bad...if you have another winding...try swapping it out...be sure to check your ground wires...have you got a ground from coils to motor case? Quote
billy d Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 one more thought...make sure your spark plug cap wires are good and not rusty or broken Quote
XxMeltIcexX Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Penton said with the nature of these coils they cannot be accurately tested, you'd have to send them in to make sure everything is good. Are you sure both cylinders are cutting out? Is it noticeable more so on one cylinder? Heat, smoke, etc? Things to check: -Gapping of the moons around flywheel, you can use a business card to space around the flywheel. -Timing -Wires to coils are nice and tight, they need to be tight or they rattle loose at high RPMS -Have plug wires on the correct side (as well as I've found that you should be running stock PVL non resistor caps) -Ground adequate, I use a wire for each coil to the head. -Plug Gapping 20 thou, B9egv plugs is what I run Keep us updated, dont give up on the PVL. hellride96 Posted July 21, 2009 Author Report Posted July 21, 2009 i dont plan on givin up on pvl, its been to good over the pass two seasons. im tearin my bike down any ways tonight to send cylinders off to be redone for a 4 mil. so ill check the gap at the crank and i do have an extra pickup coil, but i think ill buy 1 more and go back with both new ones, and ill be sure to check the wires at the coil. im runnin ngk br10eix plugs. are these plugs ok to be runnin?? moneybags Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Sounds like a good question for Jim. Quote
J-Madd Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 I hate PVLS, even tough I still run a couple. BTW, how do you adjust the spacing of the stators around the flywheel? There is no adjustment, as 2 of the bolt holes for each stator are not slotted. I never did figure that out. Quote

Spacing can be achieved by tearing up a business card into four sections, loosening up the screws and using the pieces of the card for a gapper, then tighten them down and remove the cards. How have you been spacing? You can use a feeler gauge as well, but business cards are a dime a dozen out at the hill. Quote

Thery are so fuckin loose they vibrate off the sob. check it out man.needle nose pliers fixed that shit Quote
banshee332 Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 pvl's are great you just got to know how to use them. I had the one thast on the 10mill cub now for 6 years Quote

hellride96 Posted July 24, 2009 Author Report Posted July 24, 2009 well i tore it down and found that on the left cylinder (odvisouly the side that was detnating) that was the side that the reed split. piston and dome looked like some one took a pick and hammer to it. but o well!!! sent cylinders out to passion yesterday, so i have to have different pistons and domes cut to beable to run a 4 mil with my set up so at least it doesnt hurt that bad right now since i was going to replace all that stuff anyways. thanks for the help guys. ill let ya'll know when i get it back together Quote

How have you been spacing? You can use a feeler gauge as well, but business cards are a dime a dozen out at the hill. I used tape like suggested in the directions, but I can't see where its possible to adjust the spacing. 2 of the bolt holes are not slotted, leaving not room for adjustment. When you tighten it up, it will have the same spacing regardless of how much tape is wrapped around the flywheel, or how thick of a business card is used. When I'm out of spare parts and my PVLS have all grenaded, I'll be done with them. I'll keep using them for now. Quote
hellride96 Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 another update........ split cases to clean things up and to get ready for the 4 mil. and found the root cause. left crank bearing feel apart in my hands when cases come apart. cage tore up. seal torn alittle bit leaning out that left side. but at least i was planning on replacing this stuff anyways and it doesnt hurt AS bad. i was really leaning toward my pvl to be at fault but it wasnt. it really feels good to find the true failed part, and knowning when i go back together with it, i know its fixed and ready to rip!!!! thanks for the input guys, ill let you know when its back running. travis Quote
