Ok any help will be appreciated.

I bought my 99' banshee about three years ago. It has always run great, then it slowly started getting harder to start and would just flood. I could pull start it and once warm it would start fine.

Recently while riding the the throttle started sticking and if i shifted into a higer gear and popped the clutch it would stop and then run fine again. I was about to park it and the throttle then stuck at about 3/4 throttle, pulling the teather, shutting off the key, and switching the handle bar switch off did not kill the bike. After about 15sec it died on it's own. I waited a hour and it started back up but i did not drive it. This scared me so i decided that i have been riding it for a few years without doing any work on it except for plugs, and oil.

I decided to rebuild the carbs not knowing what the problem was. It will now, without flooding, start fine with the choke full on. However it idles pretty high, and idles up and down on its own. If i push the choke back in it will die. Also while trying to get it to idle correctly it once again went to 3/4 throttle on it's own, and shutting off the key, switch, and pulling the teather did not kill it. After about 15sec again it died and will start back up but i'm lost on what to do.

I have been reading around and have heard about air leaks, TORS problems, Reed problems, and sticky throttle cables?

Anyone who can help me please write me back ASAP. If any additonal info would be helpful let me know.

THANKS,

NICK

sounds like the biggest thing is an air leak. doesn't have to be a big one, and it will do that. check your intake boots for cracks, and spray some carb cleaner around the intakes while it's idling and it will change when you spray where it's leaking

also, the best thing to do when it gets into a runaway like that is to kick it up to 6th, and hold the foot brake while you let the clutch out. 15 seconds can do some dmage, if it hasn't already.

you had preignition. that means you have a bad crank seal normally. whats happining is the bike is getting so hot the gas cumbust from the heat. it doesnt sound like a sticky cable to me. did you throtel it and it got stock there or did it go from idle to 3/4 rev without you tuching the bike.

The first time it did it i may have throttled it up but not to 3/4 throttle, the second time i never even touched the throttle.

Would the bad crank seal cause the high idle?

Thanks for the advice i will take a stab at that this weekend and let you know what happens, also have u heard of this crank seal problem too?

yes, but it will smoke, usually out of one side. a head gasket would blow sweet smelling smoke, and a base gasket would be the same as the intakes/reeds. another thong to look at, would be the choke tube, for splits and cracks. that would be like having up to a 1/4" hole leaking. it's probably a good idea to test your compression, as well. it can still run with melted pistons.

This might sound dumb but what is the choke tube, are you talking about the o-ring on the choke lever itself in the carb?

I will get it running this weekend and check for air leaks, and check the compression.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help, this forum is awesome.

the choke tube is a little piece of vaccume hose that goes from the back side of the choke plunger to the right carb

Alright this weekend i started up my banshee and started spraying around with carb clean and found a leak. Once i got the bike apart i found the left side carb joint had a rip in it. So i ordered a set of new ones and a tors eliminator kit also.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all the help again and i will work on it this weekend and let you guys know how it goes.
