IDAHOBALLER Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 (edited) I have been working on a banshee for a friend and I am stumped on why the cylinders run different. The left cylinder seems to be fine, but the right cylinder is WAY WAY WAY richer. The right exhaust pipe silencer is actually wet inside and the left is dry like it should be. When running the right side smokes alot more than the left side does, and wants to die constantly if it is below half throttle. Both carbs are jetted exactly the same. It seems like it is pulling a BUNCH more fuel into the right cylinder. The bike has PC pipes/slencers, 28mm boss intake with stock carbs, K&N filter with airbox lid removed, TORS disabled, and I believe it has been bored .60 over. I am not sure if the reeds are stock or not. It was supposedly just rebuilt. Could this be a problem with the reeds? Any ideas on what may be wrong with this thing? Thanks! lt1bird Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 you checked the float to make sure its not sticking or leaking? air cleaner clogged on that side? Quote
BellicoseBanshee Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 I would consider the right side crank seal might be failing. When it starts to fail, oil is sucked into the crank chamber and burned. Does it smell like it is burning gear oil? Usually the smell is noticeable... If you cannot find any other problems, you may want to do a leak down test and check the seal for leaks... Quote
IDAHOBALLER Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 you checked the float to make sure its not sticking or leaking? air cleaner clogged on that side? YUP, I have had the carbs apart probably ten times today and they are not sticking and are clean. It has the stock intake/airbox with the lid removed so there is only the one filter feeding both carbs. Quote

I have now gotten it to run close to idle, but I had to raise the needles all the way up to make that happen, so I guess I need to up the pilot jets one size and start over with the needle adjustments. Now it will run almost down to idle, but it still seems too lean at the bottom and wont idle at all and now that I have the needles raised all the way up the mid range seems rich. It seems to run great on top though. I have now ran it for maybe 10 minutes max and it seems like the smoking has equalized. The whole time I have been checking the plugs and they are almost identicle nice brown color. Also both pipes and cylinders seem to be getting exactly as hot as one another. All clues seem to suggest that the cylinders are actually running pretty much the same to me. Do you think that maybe there was just a bunch of spooge in the pipe that needed to be burnt out on that one side? Edited May 1, 2009 by IDAHOBALLER Quote
lt1bird Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 if that one cyl ran rich for a while due to a sticking float etc...that pipe could have alot of stu ff in it....Drive it hard and see if you can blow it out..... still does not explain the change in jetting all or a sudden.... Quote
IDAHOBALLER Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Posted May 1, 2009 I am now sure that it was just burning left over spooge in the pipe that was causing the smoke on the one side. It wouldnt start smoking until it had ran for about a minute, but then it would smoke a lot. I kept looking at the plugs though and they looked the same as each other every time so it never was running richer on that side. I ran it enough that it blew all of that crap out of there and the smoke situation is all good now. So now all I need to do is finish up the jetting and sycronize the carbs and it should be ready to rip! Thanks for the help! Quote
