Stock Carb Slides

I have stock carbs that weren't working well so I bought another set and used the best parts of each to build one good set. I keep reading that the slides are side specific. Is this true? What does that mean exactly and how do you tell which slide goes on which side

Yes there is a left and right to the slides. The best I can describe it is the cut out on the bottom of the slides goes toward the back.
